- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Waldwick Borough Council was dominated by the announcement of Council Member Donald E. Sciolaro’s resignation and the success of multiple community events. The meeting also included discussions about public safety, upcoming projects, and the community’s extraordinary support for the Toys for Tots campaign.
Donald E. Sciolaro, a longstanding member of the Waldwick Borough Council, announced his resignation during the meeting. This development led to the Mayor, Thomas A. Giordano, setting a special meeting for December 19th to appoint Sciolaro’s replacement. The Mayor mentioned that the Council itself had no control over the process of choosing the successor, as the County Committee of the party is responsible for selecting three names for consideration. The Council Clerk provided a detailed explanation of this process.
The Waldwick community’s recent involvement in various initiatives and events also took center stage. Sciolaro himself acknowledged the Fire Department’s assistance with the tree lighting ceremony and their upcoming participation in Operation Santa. The Mayor expressed gratitude for the successful tree lighting ceremony, which included the involvement of the Police Department, particularly in apprehending a suspect who tampered with the holiday tree lights.
The Council members also reflected on the success of the Toys for Tots campaign, which the community overwhelmingly supported.
Beyond community events and the resignation, the Council also discussed various operational matters. The Building and Grounds Committee reported on the progress of a water treatment system installation and the planning for public health office space. The Administrator drew attention to the budget meetings with department heads and upcoming engineering projects for the Malcol Street Pump Station.
The Council also addressed a place-to-place transfer for liquor licenses, the printing process for the 2024 calendars, and the approval of contracts for road improvements, consulting services, and a shared service agreement with the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority for Pump Station inspection services. An increase in service fees from Park Mobile, in relation to paid parking, was also discussed.
Public comment during the meeting raised concerns about the handling of ambulance services at a local facility, and a request was made for the Police Department to provide advice to protect citizens from vehicle theft. These issues, along with the cancellation of taxes for Block 163.05 lot 30 and the approval of the 2024 floating holiday, were addressed as part of the meeting’s wider agenda.
