New Ulm Human Rights Commission Introduces Dual Awards and Welcomes New Member
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Human Rights Commission held its meeting on February 23rd, focusing on several issues, including the introduction of dual awards for human rights contributions and the welcoming of a new commission member. In a recent session, commission decided to award separate prizes to individuals and organizations for their contributions to human rights. This decision came after a thorough discussion on the merits of distinguishing between the impacts made by individuals and organizations within the community. Additionally, the commission welcomed Cassie Thompson, who shared her background and enthusiasm for her new role.
The meeting’s most notable development was the commission’s decision to recognize both individuals and organizations separately for their contributions to human rights. This change was suggested after members debated the fairness of comparing the impact of individuals against that of organizations. The proposal to create two distinct award categories was met with widespread agreement, leading to a motion that passed without opposition. Nominees were then categorized, with the top two individual candidates and the three organizational candidates grouped separately for voting purposes.
The voting process revealed a clear winner in the organizational category, which was the Grand Center for Arts and Culture, recognized for its cultural equity statement and stance against systems of power and oppression through art and programming. However, the individual category resulted in a tie, prompting further discussion on how to resolve it. Various suggestions were considered, including announcing the organizational winner while exploring alternative methods to break the tie for the individual award, such as conducting a vote via email. However, it was noted that this might not be permissible under the commission’s rules.
Faced with the tie, a member humorously questioned their role as vice chair in such a situation, expressing uncertainty about managing the unexpected outcome. Ultimately, the committee decided to amend their motion to award three prizes instead of two.
In addition to the awards, the commission introduced Cassie Thompson as a new member. Thompson shared her background, mentioning that she had lived in New Ulm for eight years after moving from Phoenix via Texas. She currently works as an optical manager at Carlson Tillish Eye Clinic. Her introduction was met with an enthusiastic welcome from the commission.
The commission also discussed various subcommittees, focusing on event planning and participation. They considered dividing the event subcommittee into two distinct groups: one for participatory events and another for planning. Members expressed their preferences for which committees they would like to join. There was also an emphasis on involving younger individuals, such as students, in these events.
A legislative update was another notable topic of discussion, with references made to prior discussions about developments in Minneapolis. Insights shared by a police chief during a previous meeting were noted, and members were informed about an upcoming forum featuring Keith Ellison, which would provide further updates on legal matters. While there was uncertainty about the forum’s live broadcast, it was confirmed that it would be recorded and available on YouTube.
The meeting briefly touched upon the efficiency of the city council’s operations, with a member noting that a recent meeting lasted only nine minutes. Additionally, the commission called for volunteers for upcoming months, specifically from April to June.
