In a presentation, Kathy Perry presented the audit report for last year’s financial statements of the Jackson Board of Ed. Perry reported that the district had received an unmodified opinion, indicating a clean audit with no findings. She commended the district’s prudent financial management while pointing out the limited available funds for future use. This led to questions about the district’s financial utilization and the need for additional resources.

Updates were also provided by the Junior ROTC program. Cadets John Pencat and Drew Baroas presented an overview of their program at both Memorial and Liberty high schools. The cadets emphasized the program’s mission to develop citizens of character and integrity for service. They discussed their participation in community service initiatives, color guard events, and contributions to charitable causes such as Toys for Tots. The unit is Cadet-run, highlighting the leadership skills the program cultivates in students. The program also offers a unique opportunity for cadets to earn a private pilot’s license through a summer program in Washington, free of charge.

Superintendent Nicole Pormilli provided an update regarding the district’s progress towards its goals. She underscored the district’s mission to create well-rounded, independent learners. The district’s efforts to address student needs were highlighted, including safety measures, anti-bullying efforts, mental health support, and academic rigour. Mentioned were ongoing challenges related to budget constraints and teacher shortages, which the board is actively addressing.

The board also discussed various financial matters, including budget updates and the unsuccessful special question on the November ballot. They reiterated their pursuit of grants, such as the mental health and HVAC grants, and the completion of a project involving fuel tanks at the memorial transportation site. Safety concerns were also addressed, particularly the need for playground replacements and maintenance of gym floors and HVAC systems.

In the public forum, a community member expressed appreciation for the board’s efforts in addressing transportation, technology, and PTO. The community member also suggested offering property tax discounts to attract teachers to the area. Board members agreed that the district faced a revenue problem and voiced support for less standardized testing.
