Middlesex School Board Meeting: Financial Stability, Food Service Improvements, and Fond Farewells
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Middlesex School Board meeting, the district’s financial stability was affirmed by auditors, plans for improved food services were detailed, and the service of departing members William Coyle and Sharon Schueler was recognized. These were among the most significant topics addressed in a meeting that also included discussions on diverse dietary preferences, food pricing, and upcoming events.
The meeting began with an executive session discussing confidential matters, slated for future public disclosure. Subsequently, auditors from CLE CL and Company presented a positive evaluation of the district’s financial statements, affirming compliance with all rules and regulations. The district was commended for its early completion of the audit and its healthy capital reserve.
The district’s food service, catered by Mosaic, took center stage as they addressed concerns about a conditional health inspection at one of the schools. Mosaic not only detailed its action plan to rectify the inspection findings but also emphasized its commitment to providing healthy, locally sourced meals to the district. The company also proposed initiatives like serving locally grown produce, incorporating new menu items, and potentially hosting a farmers market at the school.
The Food Services Director presented an updated array of pizza options for the district, initiated in response to feedback from the food advisory committee. The Director also highlighted the interactive features of the district’s website and associated Nutrislice app, which both allow parents and students to access menus, nutritional information, and other related features. The introduction of voice menus was announced, further enhancing accessibility. The district’s commitment to healthy yet appealing food options was also demonstrated by the introduction of yogurt parfaits and chicken wings at various schools.
The Director addressed concerns about the lunch price increase, clarifying that it was necessary due to the removal of a 45-cent reimbursement per meal by the state. The district was also awarded a National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grant, with plans to use the funds for equipment upgrades in several schools.
The Board also discussed the possibility of increasing activities and promoting larger portion sizes for certain menu items, with profits to be used for kitchen and food services upgrades. Plans for more chef days, offering a wider range of food options for students, were also discussed.
The meeting paid tribute to the service of departing members William Coyle and Sharon Schueler, who had served on the board since 1998 and 2008 respectively. A video tribute from students and staff thanked them for their years of service.
In addition to these topics, the board’s student representative, Miss Thomas, spotlighted Parker Elementary School’s efforts to make learning engaging and build life skills for the students. Sharon Schueler, the NJSBA legislative officer and delegate, reported on her attendance at the legislative U meeting at Mercer Community College. The meeting concluded with public comments on various topics, including a suggestion to revise or remove the activity fee, a donation of 3D printers to the school from the Damon family, and a holiday concert hosted by the Friends of the Middlesex Library.
