Shutesbury Recreation Committee Endorses Land Acquisition for Conservation Effort
- Meeting Overview:
The Shutesbury Recreation Committee recently held a meeting where several topics were discussed, with the most significant being the endorsement of a land acquisition project aimed at expanding public recreational space. The committee unanimously supported a proposal for Kestrel, an organization dedicated to land conservation, to purchase a 9-plus acre parcel between Wendo Road and Locks Pond Road, adjacent to the South Brook conservation area. This land is intended for conservation and public recreation, promising to enhance open spaces and public access in Shutesbury.
The committee’s unanimous approval of a letter of support for this acquisition underscores the project’s importance. The land will be added to the existing South Brook conservation area, which already includes a snowmobile trail, thereby offering more recreational opportunities to residents. The discussion included a minor administrative correction regarding the letter of support, initially addressed to the wrong committee, which was swiftly rectified.
In addition to the conservation project, the meeting addressed several ongoing and proposed community programs. The recent trivia night was highlighted as a “very, very, very successful” event with fifteen teams participating. The event exceeded expectations with around sixty attendees, and despite facing some technical challenges, it was well-received by the community. Plans for another trivia night are in the works, potentially in May, but the committee expressed caution about scheduling conflicts with other upcoming events like a library fundraiser.
The committee also reported a successful snowshoe rental program, having purchased three pairs of snowshoes for the season. The snowshoes are in high demand, with only one pair available at the time of the meeting. This program, costing $350, might be expanded if interest continues, although storage and cataloging were noted as considerations for future growth.
Various outdoor activities were discussed, including hiking and an upcoming improv session. A recent hike occurred in cold conditions, yet participants enjoyed the experience, and another hike is planned for March 7 at Lake Wyola State Park. The improv session has garnered interest, with nine participants signed up, and aims to provide a fun outlet for creativity.
Financially, the committee clarified its status, confirming a $1,123 budget for programming and a $1,000 allocation for activities and classes as documented in the August minutes. The discussion moved to other proposed programs, such as a dance hour at Lake Wyola, Gaga Ball, mushroom identification, bird watching, and a bicycle tune-up and swap event. The Gaga Ball proposal varied in cost, with portable options being cheaper compared to more permanent installations, which could require a grant application due to their $2,000 price tag.
A garden planting event was proposed, possibly in collaboration with a local garden club member for a talk and seed swap. The committee showed enthusiasm but noted timing concerns as the planting season may be too advanced. A townwide email was suggested once a date is set, and an honorarium for the speaker was considered.
The bike swap event, previously held on May 18 last year, was discussed in detail. This event aligns with soccer activities, making it convenient for families. The logistics involve a flyer, a tent, and volunteer mechanics who traditionally decline honorariums, keeping costs low. Members proposed forming a small committee to oversee this event, emphasizing coordination with key individuals for successful execution.
The committee also revisited the idea of a community garden near Town Hall. Despite its appeal, practical issues like water access and land conditions hinder progress. Consequently, the committee voted to inform the Community Preservation Committee of their decision not to pursue the community garden at this time, allowing allocated funds to be released.
Lastly, the committee briefly touched on the upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States, exploring potential collaborations with the historical commission and local groups. Activities at the library were mentioned. A follow-up on anniversary plans will be pursued at the next meeting.
