Starbucks Set to Open in Townsend: Select Board Approves License with Conditions
- Meeting Overview:
The Townsend Select Board recently held a meeting where they addressed several community issues, including the approval of a common victualer’s license for Starbucks Corporation to open a new coffee shop on Main Street. The discussion also touched upon upcoming town elections, a notable recognition for the oldest resident, and various committee vacancies.
The most notable topic during the meeting was the approval of a common victualer’s license for Starbucks, which plans to open a new location on Main Street. The application, submitted by Starbucks Corporation, received a motion for approval with specific conditions. These conditions included obtaining necessary approvals from various departments such as building, health, and fire safety inspections. The license approval process required the applicant to satisfy all these conditions before the license could be officially issued. It was mentioned during the meeting that Starbucks is in the process of meeting these requirements and anticipates opening in the first week of April.
Concerns were raised about the hiring process, specifically regarding the challenges faced by remote areas in attracting employees. Despite these challenges, it was reported that Starbucks was doing well in this regard. After a roll call vote, the application was passed, and congratulations were extended to Starbucks for their upcoming venture. This new location is expected to provide a popular gathering spot for the community, and there was even talk of a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event to mark the grand opening. Interest in the event was expressed, with one participant indicating a desire to be among the first to enjoy a cup of coffee at the new establishment.
In addition to the Starbucks discussion, the board reviewed details related to the upcoming town election scheduled for April 27, 2026. Several positions will be on the ballot, including one seat each on the Amanda Dwight Entertainment Committee, Board of Assessors, Board of Health, Board of Water Commissioners, Cemetery and Parks Commission, and Library Board of Trustees, among others. Of particular interest are the three at-large seats available on the North Middlesex Regional School District Committee, each with a term of three years. The board clarified the at-large designation, noting that one current member represents Townsend.
Important dates for the election process were outlined, with the last day to obtain nomination papers set for March 6 at 12 p.m., and the deadline for filing papers with the Board of Registrars on March 9 at 5:00 p.m. Additionally, the deadline for voter registration and applying for mail-in ballots was set for April 17. A participant inquired about the date for printing the ballots, which was estimated to be around March 25, aligning with the final day to object to or withdraw a nomination.
The meeting also addressed vacancies on various committees, including the Agricultural Commission, Water Board of Water Commissioners, and the Commission on Disability. The latter was noted for having specific prerequisites for its members, emphasizing the inclusion of individuals with disabilities. The composition of the Commission on Disability was discussed, with a member noting that while the majority of members should be disabled individuals, it was not strictly required for all. The board had initially posted for five members but considered increasing the number, as they could appoint up to thirteen. The first meeting of this commission was planned for the following week.
Other ongoing vacancies were also mentioned, including those on the Conservation Commission, Energy Committee, Housing Authority, and Town Properties. Additionally, the Zoning Board had three vacancies: one full member to serve until 2030, another until 2028, and an associate member vacancy.
In other community news, the board celebrated the recognition of Mr. Louis Dri, the oldest resident of Townsend, with the Boston Cane award. This honor included a luncheon at the Council on Aging. The board planned to share a photo and additional information on social media to highlight this recognition. The town clerk initiates the award process by identifying the next oldest resident following the passing of the previous cane holder. A website containing historical information about past recipients adds context to the recognition of the award.
