Holliston School Committee Discusses Developments in Emergency Services, Library Board Appointment, and Community Power Program
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Holliston School Committee meeting covered a range of topics, including advancements in emergency medical services, the appointment of a new library board trustee, and updates on the community choice power program.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the discussion of improvements in the town’s emergency medical services. Fire Chief Michael Cassidy shared that all eleven town paramedics had been approved to operate under a new advanced life support model, following successful evaluations by the medical director. This development marks a substantial enhancement in the town’s emergency response capabilities, enabling paramedics to function independently without the need for mentorship. Cassidy also mentioned ongoing recruitment efforts for additional paramedic positions, expressing enthusiasm about the department’s progress and commitment to providing high-quality emergency care.
The School Committee meeting also addressed the appointment of Audrey Friend as a new trustee for the library board. The appointment process included a joint session with the library board of trustees, where Friend was introduced as the preferred candidate due to her professional background in digital communications and data management. Her volunteerism and commitment to community service were also highlighted. The selection process had involved outreach to potential candidates, with seven individuals submitting letters of interest and five being interviewed. The library board’s approach to the appointment process was discussed, with calls for greater transparency and more comprehensive input from the select board in future appointments.
Another topic was the community choice power program, which allows Holliston to purchase electricity on behalf of residents and businesses, leveraging collective buying power to secure lower prices. The program’s current supplier is First Point Power, and discussions included contract extensions and pricing options. Residents will be automatically enrolled in a standard pricing plan, with the option to opt-out. The program also offers a 100% renewable energy option, appealing to environmentally-conscious residents. The initiative is projected to save the community approximately $900,000 in 2024. The committee emphasized the need for effective communication strategies to inform residents about their enrollment and available options.
The meeting also featured discussions on municipal planning and engagement efforts. The committee deliberated on the logistics of forums aimed at gathering public input on potential sites for a new Department of Public Works facility. These forums will focus on costs and timelines associated with environmental testing and will be scheduled for August and September to ensure community involvement. The importance of careful communication was stressed to prevent misinformation and ensure residents are adequately informed about the developments.
In addition to these major topics, updates on infrastructure improvements, a farewell to Town Manager Kathleen Buckley, and the development of a climate action plan were also discussed. The meeting concluded with a proposal to recognize Charles Nickerson for his distinguished military service and contributions to the community.
