- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Pasack Valley School Board meeting, topics revolved around student success, traffic congestion around school premises, an impending leadership change, and a call for more inclusive communication. The meeting also acknowledged contributions of outgoing board member Dr. Kelly Blundy and celebrated a positive financial report.
One issue discussed at the meeting was traffic congestion during school drop-off hours, particularly at Hills High School. Board member Gini Varghese expressed enthusiasm about the potential for addressing the traffic issues, acknowledging the need for mitigation. The board deliberated on contracting a traffic engineer to resolve the drop-off congestion issue, in addition to considering proposed changes in traffic structure near the school area by the Montvale planning board. Low bus ridership at Hills and the impact of inclement weather on traffic flow were also discussed, revealing the board’s intent to improve traffic management around the school area.
The meeting also marked a transition in board leadership. Elizabeth Calderone announced that she would be stepping down from her position as president of the board at the end of her term, emphasizing the need for a new leader and requesting not to be nominated for the upcoming reorganization meeting. Dr. Blundy, known for her advocacy for student well-being, was lauded for her contributions to student wellness and was presented with a proclamation and a plaque acknowledging her dedicated service during her tenure.
In the realm of student success, the board recognized numerous accomplishments. Olivia G and Meline Gibbs presented the Pasack Hills and Pasack Valley student reports respectively, detailing various academic, co-curricular, and athletic achievements. Notably, the Pasack Valley National Honor Society provided Thanksgiving meals to local families in need and initiated a drop-in midterm tutoring program. Additionally, the Pasack Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteered at a local fundraiser, and the Pasack Valley theater held a fundraiser for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS. Several students were also recognized as AP scholars and National Merit Scholars commended students, with Joseph Blundo offering advice and wishing them well in their future endeavors.
The meeting went on to address the audit report, presented by Mr. Stankus, which showed a decrease in the fund balance from the prior year due to funds used to support capital projects. Despite this, the Enterprise funds, including the food service, the Milestone program, transportation, and Park Academy, increased their overall net position.
Community engagement was also a central theme, with several community members addressing a letter sent by Superintendent Sarah Bilotti about the conflict in the Middle East. Speakers emphasized the need for more inclusive and balanced communication, urging the board to consider the impact of their statements on the diverse student population. This call for inclusivity was echoed by board member Dr. Michael Weaver, who thanked the speakers for their courage and emphasized the importance of considering diverse viewpoints.
