Moorhead Airport Committee Plans 2027 Fly-in Amidst Ongoing Infrastructure Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The Moorhead Airport Committee meeting focused on several key projects, including updates to the airport’s infrastructure and a decision to hold the next community fly-in event in 2027. Members discussed the progress of various capital improvement projects, the challenges associated with federal grant opportunities, and the significance of the airport’s 30th-anniversary celebrations.
The committee detailed several ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the relocation of the airport’s Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) and the replacement of fuel tanks and pumps. The AWOS study has been completed, with the new location approved south of the runway. The relocation is anticipated for 2026, pending updates from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MINDOT). The grant for the fuel tank and pump replacement was awarded, and plans are in progress with Mead & Hunt. The committee expects to advertise for bids by mid-March, with construction anticipated later in the year.
Another project involves the replacement of the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights, following a MINDOT inspection. The project, funded by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant, may require the temporary closure of the runway, with construction expected to commence this year. The committee is working to inform hangar tenants about any potential disruptions.
The committee also reviewed the airport’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), designed to allocate anticipated grant funds effectively. The CIP includes projects like snowplow replacement and pavement maintenance, with future plans for a new taxiway and vehicle access road. The need for discretionary funding was highlighted, as some projects may face funding shortfalls.
In a review of the 2025 fly-in, the committee celebrated the event’s success, which coincided with the city’s sesquicentennial and attracted over 500 attendees. It featured a pancake feed, car show, and aviation displays. The committee recommended hosting the next fly-in in 2027, aligning with infrastructure projects and avoiding potential scheduling conflicts. The proposal also suggested holding the event biennially to maintain public interest and engagement.
