Wayzata School Board Advances Superintendent Search with Finalist Interviews and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Wayzata School Board held a special meeting on March 2, 2026, focusing on the search for a new superintendent, with activities planned to engage the community and evaluate the finalists. The meeting resulted in the selection of three candidates for second-round interviews: Dr. Rainey Briggs, Mr. Corey McIntyre, and Dr. Rob Virgin.
The central agenda of the meeting was the superintendent search process, supported by the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA). The board had previously narrowed the candidate pool from 20 applicants to six semi-finalists, finally recommending three individuals for further interviews. Confidentiality was a critical aspect, with candidates identified only by alphabetical identifiers until the end of the meeting to prevent premature contact. There was an emphasis on maintaining privacy and ensuring a fair evaluation process.
Barb Dawn from MSBA facilitated the discussion, highlighting the extensive community involvement in developing a leadership profile, which engaged over 2,000 participants—the highest level of engagement in any superintendent search conducted by the board. The board had accepted the subcommittee’s recommendations to advance Candidates E, L, and T, who were later identified as Dr. Rainey Briggs, Mr. Corey McIntyre, and Dr. Rob Virgin, respectively. The board approved the motion to extend second-round interview offers to these candidates unanimously.
The next steps in the hiring process involved organizing a “day in the district” for the finalists, scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Each candidate would participate in school tours and interviews with representatives from various community sectors, including school leaders, employee groups, and advisory councils. Feedback from these sessions would be compiled and shared with the board to inform their decision-making process.
The meeting also focused heavily on the transparency of the interviews. There was a debate about whether to post the recorded interviews of the finalists for public viewing. While some board members advocated for posting all interviews to bolster transparency and community trust, others raised concerns about potential backlash from unsuccessful candidates’ interviews being publicized. Ultimately, a consensus emerged to post the candidate interviews for ten days.
The board discussed the structure and scheduling of the interviews, set to begin at 8:30 AM on the following Friday, with each interview lasting an hour and a half. The board members were tasked with finalizing the rubric for evaluating candidates, agreeing to review candidate applications and community feedback in advance. Concerns about live-streaming the interviews due to potential advantages for candidates interviewed later in the day led to a decision against live-streaming.
There was also a discussion regarding the formulation of interview questions. The board members worked collaboratively to consolidate and refine the questions. They ultimately decided on fourteen questions, allowing for an extended interview duration to accommodate the additional inquiries.
