Ada City Council Approves $15,000 for Baseball Field Resurfacing Amidst Competitive Bidding Success
- Meeting Overview:
The Ada City Council meeting focused on several community projects, including the approval of $15,000 for the resurfacing of local baseball fields and the favorable results of a recent bid opening for a public works project. The council also navigated discussions around community events and public works projects.
A primary highlight of the meeting was the council’s unanimous decision to allocate $15,000 towards the resurfacing of the Toneyside and Deco baseball fields, following a proposal by Mike Erickson, a local teacher and head baseball coach. Erickson reported on the fields’ deficiencies, particularly in water retention and safety, which were identified by Minnesota Sod Company. He emphasized the need to rework the main diamond to meet safety standards, especially for older players. The project’s estimated cost for the main diamond stands at $50,000, with the school already committed to contributing $35,000. Erickson articulated the urgency for completion by the summer of 2026.
Another point of discussion involved the results of a recent bid opening for a public works project, which was described as “uber successful.” The process saw participation from 19 contractors, with 13 submitting bids. The lowest bid, offered by Great States Construction, was notably $1,340,000 for the base project, with additional costs if all alternates were accepted. This bid was lower than other submissions, presenting a potential savings of over $1,000,000 for the city. The council now faces decisions regarding various project alternates, including the potential addition of a shop annex, a new city hall, and a police department, along with essential upgrades like floor heating for the shop’s concrete. Discussion underscored the need to balance project ambition with budget constraints, with future meetings planned to further review these options.
The council also addressed the upcoming citywide cleanup event scheduled for early May, facing a debate over whether to reintroduce curbside pickup services. While some council members highlighted community demand for more convenient waste disposal options, concerns about logistical challenges and increased costs led to a decision to maintain the current drop-off system. A motion was passed to keep the existing structure, with plans to advertise the event dates and logistics to the public. The council acknowledged ongoing community interest in curbside services and committed to revisiting the matter in future discussions.
In addition, the council approved funding requests for various community initiatives. A self-defense workshop, spearheaded by motivational speaker Mariah Prushaw, received a $500 contribution from the city to support its aim of equipping community members with valuable skills. Furthermore, a post-prom event designed to enhance safety for high school juniors and seniors was granted $500.
Jim Birkemeyer, representing the Norman County Ag Society and Norman County Fair, expressed gratitude for the city’s past support and requested an increase in funding for the upcoming fair.
Lastly, the council entertained a request from Nick Prothrow regarding potential development lots and city water access outside city limits. Prothrow’s consultations with engineers and public works raised questions about infrastructure management and ownership, with the council showing openness to the proposal provided all necessary permits and agreements are secured.
