Ada City Council Approves Baseball Field Resurfacing Project Amid Competitive Construction Bids and Community Events
- Meeting Overview:
The Ada City Council recently held a meeting that featured discussions and decisions, including the approval of a $15,000 contribution for resurfacing two local baseball fields, an impressive competitive bidding process for a city construction project, and funding for various community events.
The council gave special attention to a proposal by Mike Erickson, a local teacher and baseball coach, to improve Toneyside Field and Deco Field. Erickson shared that the Minnesota Sod Company had identified safety issues such as water retention and uneven surfaces on these fields, which posed risks to players. The project aims to level the fields and adjust infield dimensions, particularly benefiting higher-grade players. The project’s total cost is estimated at $50,000, with the school district committing $35,000. Erickson sought additional funding of $15,000 from the city, which the council approved unanimously. The potential for securing a matching grant from the DECO Foundation by April was also discussed, highlighting collaborative efforts to ensure the project’s success.
Attention then turned to the recent bid opening for a city construction project. The meeting revealed that 19 general contractors were interested, with 13 submitting bids. The competitive nature of the bidding was underscored by the winning bid from Great States Construction, amounting to a base of $1,340,000, lower than the highest bid submitted. This competitive bid was attributed to the company’s proximity to Ada, as they were already involved in a local project. The council was briefed on various project alternates, with discussions about potential expansions and improvements, such as adding a new city hall and police department facilities. The importance of making informed decisions about these alternates was emphasized, as the council would need to reconvene for further deliberations on the bids and project components.
The council also addressed several community funding requests. Brianna, representing community education, introduced a self-defense workshop led by motivational speaker Mariah Prushaw. The event, scheduled for March 14, is open to the community and received $500 in funding from the city, supplementing the school’s $2,000 contribution. Additionally, Brianna presented a request for $500 to support the Adebore of West Post Prom event. This event, organized by the junior class, aims to host a banquet for juniors, seniors, and their dates, featuring food from local vendors.
Jim Birkemeyer of the Norman County Ag Society thanked the city for its support and requested a $5,000 contribution from the gaming fund, citing the fair’s economic impact on the city. The council discussed past contributions and ultimately approved a $500 request from the gaming fund, aligning with previous funding levels.
In another notable discussion, the council considered a proposal by Nick Prothrow to connect city water to potential development lots outside city limits. The council expressed general agreement with the project, provided a developer’s agreement could clarify future ownership and maintenance responsibilities once the line is turned over to the city.
The meeting also covered ongoing discussions about a levee project, with emphasis on ensuring compliance with federal standards and avoiding adverse impacts on the city’s flood rating. The involvement of the Army Corps of Engineers and the necessity of a FEMA signature were noted, with alternate project routes suggested to mitigate potential issues.
Lastly, the council deliberated on the logistics of an upcoming community cleanup event scheduled for May 7-9. Despite some disagreement over the potential return of curbside collection, the council decided to maintain the existing drop-off structure due to cost considerations and logistical challenges. A motion to continue with the previous year’s approach was ultimately passed, concluding the cleanup debate.
