Margate City Council Faces Residents’ Frustrations Over Tequila Bar Noise and Parking Issues
- Meeting Overview:
At the latest Margate City Council meeting, residents expressed concerns over noise and parking issues stemming from a local establishment known as Tequila Sunrise. In addition to addressing these grievances, the council discussed ongoing city projects, financial reports, and departmental updates.
The meeting’s primary focus was on public comments related to the Tequila Sunrise bar. Residents, including Jeff Hoffner, voiced their frustrations over persistent noise disturbances and parking challenges associated with the establishment. Hoffner highlighted that despite several noise violations issued to Tequila Sunrise, the disturbances continued unabated, particularly during the summer months. He questioned whether the bar required zoning permits for new window installations and expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of these windows in mitigating noise, arguing that “the noise is going to go straight out the window.” The council acknowledged the difficulty in enforcing noise ordinances and discussed the possibility of engaging a sound engineer to assess the situation further.
Parking issues were also a concern during the meeting. Residents noted that the influx of patrons to Tequila Sunrise, especially during peak summer times, exacerbated parking shortages in the neighborhood. One resident recalled observing “200 people walking down the street” on a Sunday, despite the bar’s occupancy limit being 90, raising concerns about compliance with occupancy regulations. The council discussed potential solutions, such as implementing permit parking systems similar to those in nearby towns like Ventnor and Atlantic City. The idea of designated parking areas for residents was also explored, though it was noted that state ordinances restrict parking exclusively to residents.
The meeting also addressed broader concerns about the impact of increased business activity on the community. A council member acknowledged that Margate’s parking situation was a longstanding issue, intensified by seasonal tourism and the growth of new dining establishments. They highlighted that even significant investments in parking infrastructure would not fully resolve the challenges during peak times.
In addition to public grievances, the meeting covered various city updates and projects. The engineering report revealed progress on significant projects, including the nearing completion of the citywide dredging permit process and the submission of the lead service line phase 2 project to the iBank. Furthermore, the city received an additional $289,000 in federal funding for the Washington Avenue streetscape project, supplementing previously secured grants.
The council also received a detailed financial report for 2025, noting total taxes collected amounted to $74,574.12, with utilities contributing $6,467,558 in revenue. A surplus of $8,586,173 marked an increase from the previous year. The total debt stood at $88,566.84, impacting the budget minimally. The council is engaged in budgetary discussions. A new employee in accounts payable was introduced, bringing municipal auditing experience to the team.
Chief Henson reported on the retirement of Captain Jeff Lee from the Margate Police Department after 25 years of service. The department is conducting background checks to fill vacancies left by Captain Lee’s retirement and a recent resignation. Chief Henson emphasized the rigorous hiring process, which includes comprehensive evaluations before candidates can serve independently.
During the meeting, public works efforts following a recent storm were commended. Chief Adams praised the department for maintaining Margate’s streets, which were reportedly among the best in Atlantic County during the inclement weather. Commissioner Tom discussed ongoing cleanup efforts and upcoming road sweeping activities.
