Middleborough School Committee Forms Subcommittee to Reevaluate ELA Curriculum Amid Budget Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Middleborough School Committee addressed concerns surrounding the newly introduced English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, voted to create a subcommittee for its reevaluation, and discussed related budgetary implications. The meeting also covered a range of other topics, including a proposed eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., and the potential renewal of a bus transportation contract.
One notable issue discussed was the controversy surrounding the newly implemented ELA curriculum, known as the SAVIS program. Concerns were voiced during the public comment session by several teachers and community members. They expressed dissatisfaction with the program, highlighting issues such as its lack of developmental appropriateness and engagement for students. Teachers who piloted the program shared that it relied heavily on manufactured texts rather than authentic literature, raising concerns about its impact on student learning. The dissatisfaction among teachers who piloted the program was compounded by the district’s financial challenges, with a $2.5 million budget deficit already straining resources.
In response to the concerns raised, the Superintendent proposed the formation of a subcommittee to conduct a review of the ELA program. This subcommittee would include principals, pilot program teachers, the Director of Curriculum, and two school committee members. The Superintendent emphasized the importance of thoroughly analyzing the feedback before making any final recommendations. The proposal highlighted the need for an additional month to a month and a half to conduct this review, with the understanding that the program’s budget allocation could be reallocated if necessary. The committee unanimously approved the creation of the subcommittee.
Another focal point of the meeting was the proposed eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. The trip aims to provide students with an enriching educational experience, including visits to significant historical sites such as the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Pentagon Memorial. The committee discussed the itinerary, safety measures, and logistical details, including the selection of EF Tours as the vendor. The trip’s cost, set at $1,449 per student for a four-day, three-night stay, was a point of concern, prompting the committee to explore potential fundraising opportunities to assist families facing financial challenges. The committee recognized the importance of the trip for students’ civic education and expressed support for moving forward with the plans.
Additionally, the committee addressed the renewal of the existing bus transportation contract with the five-star bus company. Concerns were raised about late dismissal times at the schools, which some attributed to the bus service’s punctuality issues. The committee acknowledged the need to address these concerns and agreed to renew the contract for one more year while preparing to solicit new bids for transportation services in the future. The importance of maintaining reliable transportation services was emphasized, alongside the necessity of addressing communication issues with the current provider.
The meeting also included discussions about the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and the roof project for John T. Nichols Middle School. The committee approved the allocation of $100,000 for a schematic design of the roof, which would be funded from the facility rental account.
Other items on the agenda included the acknowledgment of award winners from a recent STEM fair, with eighth-grader Scotty Brogna receiving first place in the controlled experiment category. The committee also discussed the school calendar, addressing potential changes due to weather-related closures and efforts to secure a waiver for an earlier end date to the school year.
