Boston Celebrates Record Graduation Rates and Expansion of Educational Programs
- Meeting Overview:
Boston’s Planning and Development Board meeting spotlighted the achievements in the Boston Public Schools (BPS), celebrating a record-high graduation rate and the expansion of college and career programs. Mayor Michelle Wu announced that BPS had reached its highest graduation rate of 81.3%. This milestone coincides with a corresponding drop in the dropout rate, excluding the remote learning period of the pandemic.
Notably, the expansion of Advanced Placement (AP) courses across high schools was highlighted. New subjects, including AP research, African-American studies, pre-calculus, and computer science, were introduced to broaden student exposure to college-level coursework. The Dearborn STEM Academy was specifically mentioned for its initiative where every ninth grader is enrolled in AP biology, fostering an environment of academic rigor and success. This initiative forms part of a broader effort that has resulted in a fivefold increase in BPS students taking early college courses compared to four years ago.
Partnerships with local colleges have further bolstered the educational landscape, enabling students to engage in early college and dual enrollment programs across fields such as computer science, biotech, health sciences, and business management. The Future Boss initiative, guaranteeing paid summer jobs for all interested BPS students, was also introduced as part of the career exploration and counseling enhancements. This program, alongside MyCAP, a counseling initiative starting in sixth grade, helps students plan their post-secondary futures.
Superintendent Mary Skipper highlighted the collective engagement of students and educators as a driving force behind these achievements. She acknowledged the mayor’s role in prioritizing student needs and resources, emphasizing the importance of the re-engagement center, which reconnects students who have disengaged from school. This initiative targets students facing various personal challenges, providing them with the support necessary to continue their education.
The meeting also acknowledged the significant improvements in student performance metrics. Growth was noted in English Language Arts achievement at the elementary level, advancements in middle school science, and a reduction in the high school dropout rate. The success in supporting multilingual learners through improved English language proficiency was particularly emphasized. Partnerships with families have also contributed to improvements in chronic absenteeism.
The Boston Plan for Excellence (BPE) partnership was highlighted for its contribution to early college programs, with nearly one-third of students in grades 10 through 12 participating and achieving a 93% success rate. This initiative has saved families over $1.3 million in tuition and fees since 2022.
The meeting featured remarks from various stakeholders, including Marinel Ruminer from Advesters, who congratulated the BPS team on their progress, specifically mentioning Dearborn as a highly improving institution. Ruminer discussed the New Skills Boston initiative, which aims to increase access to quality college and career pathways. The graduation rate for students in these pathways was reported at 93%, higher than the overall rate.
Michael O’Neal, executive director of the Private Industry Council, emphasized the importance of summer job opportunities for BPS students, supported by a commitment from the Mayor. O’Neal shared a story of a graduate from East Boston High School who overcame challenges related to dyslexia through the support of full-inclusion classrooms and career pathways, eventually aspiring to become the chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
