New Milford Borough Council Faces Community Concerns Over ICE, Adopts Key Ordinances
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Milford Borough Council meeting, one notable issue was the community’s concern about potential interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the area. Residents expressed fears over increased ICE activity and called on the council to take measures to protect constitutional rights. Alongside this, the council unanimously adopted several important ordinances, including those related to infrastructure improvements and new municipal programs.
During the public comments section, Carrie Hiddle, a lifelong resident, voiced urgent concerns regarding ICE operations in Northern New Jersey. She drew comparisons to the situation in Minneapolis, highlighting growing tensions and urging the council to act against what she described as a regime of hatred and fear. Hiddle emphasized, “This should alarm every American citizen for the denial of rights to even one citizen is a threat to the rights of every one of us,” underscoring the need for due process for all individuals. She called for resolutions to limit ICE’s authority, particularly in sensitive areas like schools and healthcare facilities without a judicial warrant, stressing that “Silence is complicity.”
Following Hiddle, Lori Barton echoed her sentiments, referencing historical parallels to the 1930s in Germany. Barton stressed the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights for all community members, stating, “We need to protect the constitutional rights of everybody the way the constitution says.” The council was encouraged to engage in discussions on these issues in future meetings. Another resident, Phil Sherman, supported Hiddle’s call for action, emphasizing the need for law enforcement accountability and expressing concern over potential ICE violations.
The council showed a willingness to address these community concerns, with one member suggesting that the issues be added to the agenda for the next meeting.
In addition to the public’s concerns about ICE, the council handled several significant legislative matters. A ordinance authorized the replacement of sanitary sewer lines on Pine Avenue and Hughes Road, with a $490,000 appropriation, including a federal grant of $365,395. This ordinance aims to improve manholes and roadway resurfacing and was adopted unanimously after being opened for public comment.
The council also introduced an ordinance to amend the issuance of certificates of occupancy, requiring all municipal fines on a property to be settled beforehand. Another ordinance focused on reserving parking spaces for electric vehicles, and both were set for a public hearing. Additionally, proposed amendments to fees for lead-based paint inspections in residential rentals and regulations for parking during street cleaning and snow removal were introduced, with hearings scheduled for March 23.
The meeting also addressed infrastructure enhancements through various ordinances. Ordinance 2026 col01 authorized a financial agreement to facilitate the construction of 160 residential units, including affordable housing, with unanimous approval. Ordinance 2026 col04 concerned a $50,000 appropriation for restoring headstones in the historic French Hugenot Cemetery. Other ordinances involved road improvements, the establishment of a memorial bench and tree dedication program, and the allocation of funds for a new tax and finance computer system.
A notable administrative update was the transition to publishing legal notices on the borough’s official website, effective March 1, to improve transparency and accessibility. Additionally, the council discussed a gas main replacement project set to cover over five miles of roadway across 20 streets, emphasizing the need for clear communication to minimize confusion.
