Cape May Committee Plans E-Bike Safety Outreach as City Readies for Busy Summer Season
- Meeting Overview:
The Cape May Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee convened to discuss a series of initiatives focused on promoting e-bike safety and preparing for community engagement events, particularly with the upcoming citywide open house. Key topics included the development of an educational pamphlet on e-bike regulations and potential infrastructure improvements within the city.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to addressing the rising presence of e-bikes in the community. The committee underscored the importance of creating a comprehensive pamphlet that would educate residents and visitors about proper e-bike operation, riding locations, and recent legislative changes concerning e-bikes. This initiative aims to replicate the success of a previous low-speed vehicle brochure that effectively informed the public. The committee highlighted the need for collaboration among members, law enforcement, and civic affairs representatives to distill extensive information into a concise and clear format. A target date of April 14th was set for finalizing the pamphlet content.
Concerns were raised about the potential for legislative changes that could render printed materials obsolete shortly after distribution. To counter this, a suggestion was made to include a QR code on the pamphlet, linking to a website for real-time updates. This approach would ensure that the information remains current and accessible, addressing the transient nature of the community and the continuous arrival of new visitors. The committee also debated the format of the pamphlet, considering options like a bifold brochure or a simpler wrap card design, with an emphasis on visual appeal to capture attention in high-traffic areas.
The upcoming citywide open house, scheduled for May 20th at Convention Hall, was another focal point of the meeting. This event will feature opening addresses by the mayor and city manager, followed by presentations from various committees and commissions. The open house is designed to facilitate direct engagement between committee members and the public. The Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee plans to use this opportunity to further promote e-bike safety and distribute their educational materials.
In preparation for the open house, the committee discussed the creation of presentation slides detailing their purpose and ongoing initiatives. They set the same April 14th deadline to submit content for these slides to ensure readiness for the event. The committee expressed a desire to inform the public about their activities rather than recruit new members.
Infrastructure projects were also discussed, notably the progress of the Promenade project, which is on track for completion by June. However, the Safe Streets project on Pennsylvania Avenue has been delayed until the fall, with a start expected around September. This project aims to enhance safety features, including crosswalks and bike sharers. The committee acknowledged challenges with the county and the involvement of the Department of Transportation (DOT) in moving the project forward.
Additionally, concerns about existing infrastructure issues were raised, such as a gap in the sidewalk at the intersection of Broad and St. John’s and inadequate lighting at the entrance to the Acme parking lot. There was also an issue with inconsistent signage at the promenade regarding bicycle access times, which will be addressed in a broader signage project.
The committee proposed that law enforcement could distribute educational materials to first-time violators of bike regulations, promoting education over punishment. This was likened to a similar initiative concerning low-speed vehicles.
