Fall River School Committee Tackles Technology Overhaul and Print Services Reform
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Fall River School Committee meeting, attention was given to the district’s technology management and future planning, alongside a detailed examination of current print services. The committee discussed the need for a comprehensive five-year technology plan and debated improvements to the district’s managed print services.
The most pressing discussion surrounded the district’s technology management. Concerns were raised about the allocation of technology personnel, particularly between middle and high schools. It was noted that the middle school, serving 1,800 students, has only one instructional tech coach, while the high school, with 2,400 students, has three. This disparity prompted calls for a reevaluation, especially given the increasing technological demands in educational settings.
Further discussions highlighted the need for a comprehensive technology plan, with members emphasizing the urgency of establishing a clear and actionable strategy. The current two-year plan had already lapsed, and there was a strong push to finalize a five-year technology plan that would include initiatives like district-wide Wi-Fi upgrades and the integration of AI tools for departmental use. The plan also aims to streamline technology audits, ensuring all technological assets, including Chromebooks and other devices, are accounted for within a unified inventory system.
The committee also discussed the management of Chromebooks, addressing accountability measures for damaged devices. There was an emphasis on a more policy to hold students accountable for intentional damage, with suggestions to refer unpaid damages to collections. The introduction of ParentSquare as a platform for notifying parents about damages was proposed to increase transparency and parental involvement.
Alongside technology management, the committee scrutinized the district’s managed print services. The current request for quotation (RFQ) process aims to modernize the district’s copy center and transition to a managed print service model. The discussion revealed that existing machines, some over a decade old, are inefficient and create inequities in capabilities across schools. By inviting vendors to buy out existing leases, the district hopes to consolidate payments and achieve cost savings.
Questions were raised about the cost-effectiveness of maintaining the district copy center versus in-school copying, with a detailed cost-benefit analysis suggested as a necessary step. The absence of a dedicated copy center clerk since the last retirement six years ago was noted as a concern, potentially affecting operational efficiency. The committee discussed the need for a uniform color copy policy across all schools to prevent excessive spending.
The meeting also included updates on the Crown Castle contract for internet services, set to run until 2029, with an 80% federal subsidy. The district’s technology, particularly at Morton School, was flagged as outdated, necessitating updates to ensure security and functionality. The need for a clear installation plan for new equipment, alongside the recent resignation of a low-voltage electrician, was identified as a potential hurdle.
In addition to these, the committee touched upon the efficiency of software systems like Brightly and the need for a unified approach to technology use and damages, including actions for staff damage. There was a call for clarity and consistency in policies across the district.
