Verona Town Council Discusses Roadwork on Lindon Avenue Amidst Resident Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Verona Town Council meeting, discussions focused on the imminent roadwork planned for Lindon Avenue, addressing concerns from residents about traffic, tree removal, and drainage issues. The council and project representatives provided plans to mitigate disruption while enhancing infrastructure, emphasizing communication and safety as key priorities.
The main topic of the meeting was the upcoming roadwork on Lindon Avenue, commencing the following day. Led by Chuck Bolano, the superintendent of public works, the project aims to address the deteriorating condition of the road, which Bolano described as “a mess.” The comprehensive plan includes milling, paving, and replacing Belgian block curbs and sidewalks. To ensure compliance with state mandates, the initiative will involve checking for lead water services prior to paving to prevent future disruptions.
Adjustmentsttention was given to the project’s impact on traffic, particularly during school hours. Efforts to minimize inconvenience include scheduling construction to start after 8:30 AM and finish before 2:30 PM, thus avoiding peak traffic times. A resident voiced concern about traffic congestion near Fairview during sports practices, which the council acknowledged, reiterating their commitment to adjusting work schedules as needed.
An important aspect of the project involves the removal and replacement of trees. Trees that compromise sidewalks will be taken down, and homes without trees will receive letters offering new plantings. The shade tree commission will select tree species. Bolano assured residents that any tree preservation requests would be considered, with options such as curving sidewalks around trees as potential solutions. The council noted that only trees affecting sidewalks would be removed, estimating the removal of two to eight trees based on condition assessments during the project.
The council addressed concerns about drainage, particularly the potential for icing issues during winter. Sump pumps along Lindon Avenue will be connected to the storm sewer system to mitigate this risk. Residents raised the issue of drainage lines running beneath newly replaced sidewalks, to which the council confirmed that any such pipes would be appropriately managed.
The construction team emphasized the importance of communication throughout the project. Bolano offered his contact information to residents, urging them to reach out with any issues, as direct communication with the contractor could be challenging due to language barriers. Furthermore, residents were advised to wait until the project’s completion before undertaking any driveway repairs to avoid complications.
Traffic safety on Lindon Avenue was another focal point, with residents expressing concerns about speeding vehicles. While Bolano clarified that speed management fell outside his purview, he proposed additional road striping near the bridge to slow traffic. The installation of speed bumps was discussed, but Bolano noted that the feasibility of such measures depended on specific criteria related to road grade and curve, alongside significant paperwork and potential safety concerns.
Discussions also highlighted the timeline for the construction, which will proceed in phases starting from Compton Avenue to Elmer Road. Residents will receive notifications about work phases, with paving scheduled post-April 1, contingent on weather conditions. Bolano concluded the meeting by acknowledging potential delays due to weather and assured residents of ongoing communication and safety measures throughout the process.
