Acushnet Board of Health Threatens Daily Fines for Septic System Noncompliance
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Acushnet Board of Health addressed ongoing issues with septic systems, voting to impose daily fines on property owners who fail to comply with state environmental regulations. The board discussed two cases of noncompliance, resulting in motions to issue notices with potential financial penalties.
One notable issue involved a property on Carol Street, where the owner has not submitted a required septic plan despite prior communications. Board members noted that although a percolation test was performed in January 2023, no plans have been filed for review. Concerns were raised about the owner’s lack of engagement, with members suggesting that the property was purchased with cash, circumventing the need for a Title 5 inspection at the time of sale. A motion was passed to send a certified letter demanding a septic system design plan within 60 days. Failure to comply will result in fines of $200 per day until the issue is resolved.
Another property on Frank Street was also discussed, where an approved septic plan from 2018 has not been acted upon. The board decided to send a similar letter requiring the property owner to have a licensed contractor pull a permit within 60 days and complete installation within 90 days. Noncompliance will also incur fines of $200 per day.
