North Miami City Council Explores Youth Initiatives and Trip Planning Amid Busy Schedule
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the North Miami City Council delved into plans for joint events with the Myar Youth Council, debated the scheduling of an end-of-year trip, and discussed various fundraising strategies to support future youth council activities. The council aimed to enhance collaboration with another municipality’s youth council, while also grappling with logistical challenges related to planning and funding initiatives.
The council prioritized discussions about a joint event with the Myar Youth Council, emphasizing the need for swift action as many members were set to leave the youth council by May. The proposal, born from an idea by Councilwoman Mary Estimé-Irvin, sought to establish a beneficial program for both councils. This initiative was seen as an opportunity to promote the youth council, especially in light of the upcoming departures, and to strengthen ties with the Myar Youth Council, which had previously collaborated with North Miami.
The council explored several ideas for the event, including reviving a successful youth summit that had previously promoted leadership discussions. A “potluck style” event was also proposed, with members considering the inclusion of food and a career-focused element to prepare members for college. The timing of the event was a focal point, with April and May identified as potential months, though concerns about conflicts with AP testing were raised. The council stressed the importance of finalizing the event’s theme before reaching out to the Myar Youth Council, which was currently attending the National League of Cities.
In addition to the joint event, the council discussed the feasibility of organizing a second event in May to coincide with Caribbean History Month. Revisiting a successful mental health awareness event from the previous year was suggested, with members highlighting the cultural connections between the two councils. The past event had featured a well-received panel discussion with experts, and there was enthusiasm for continuing this initiative to promote the youth council’s efforts for future generations.
The council then turned its attention to a professional development trip, previously held in New York, which had been deemed beneficial. Planning for this year’s trip was emphasized to avoid the late planning issues experienced last year. The first week of June was proposed as an ideal timeframe, aligning with council members’ graduations. However, the possibility of shifting the destination to Washington, D.C., was debated. While D.C. was seen as providing valuable governmental insights, the lack of a specific conference or event posed a challenge for organizing meaningful meetings with elected officials. Ultimately, practical considerations and established contacts in New York favored the original destination.
The scheduling of the trip was a contentious issue, with members expressing concerns about conflicting schedules, particularly in May, which was identified as a busy month. Various dates were proposed, with May 31st through June 4th emerging as a tentative option, pending confirmation of the mayor’s school obligations. The importance of a consensus on dates was underscored, as was the need for clear objectives to justify the trip.
Fundraising to support the trip and future activities was another key topic. With a one-time donation of $15,000 secured, the council discussed maintaining a healthy budget for the next youth council cohort. Suggestions included car washes, chocolate sales, and bake sales, though the latter’s practicality was questioned. Collaborating with the Commission for Women was considered, given their fundraising capabilities, but some members preferred independent fundraising efforts.
The council explored additional fundraising ideas, such as bingo or trivia nights, but emphasized the need for thorough research and feasibility assessments. Outreach efforts were also discussed, with suggestions to utilize community venues and engage directly with schools, despite challenges posed by school district policies on external materials.
The meeting concluded with reflections on a previous trip to Tallahassee, where the youth council had participated in the Florida League of Cities, proposing a city bike initiative to enhance local transportation. This networking experience with other youth councils was highlighted as beneficial.
