Greater Lowell Technical School Implements New Lottery System for Class of 2030 Admissions
- Meeting Overview:
The Greater Lowell Technical School Committee hosted a virtual admissions lottery for the class of 2030. This event, which saw over 1,200 applications for 595 available seats, highlighted the growing demand for career technical education.
Superintendent Jill Davis explained the updated admissions process, which aligns with the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education’s regulations requiring career technical education schools with more applicants than available seats to utilize a blind or weighted lottery. The regulations, effective for students entering grade nine in fall 2026, aim to ensure fairness and transparency in admissions. The Greater Lowell Technical High School’s admissions policy, approved in October 2025, incorporates a weighted lottery system and requires applicants to demonstrate awareness of career technical education through participation in open houses, tours, or online modules. Additional weights, based on factors such as attendance, discipline, and interest in career technical education, provide applicants with enhanced chances of selection but do not exclude any eligible applicants.
The admissions lottery was conducted for resident students from Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, and Tyngsborough, with separate lotteries for each community. The system used a third-party electronic system to manage the random selection process. The lottery results were not announced during the live event but will be communicated via email and posted on the school’s website within two business days. Applicants will be informed of their admission or waitlist status, and those accepted have ten days to complete registration.
Participants in the event included various school officials serving as certification team members. The lottery was conducted publicly, with student confidentiality maintained by using unique lottery ID numbers. The meeting concluded with a commitment from the school administration to assist applicants throughout the registration and enrollment process, emphasizing the importance of accurate and complete application information.
