Parsons Elementary and North Brunswick School Board Celebrate National Photography Award Amid Retirements and Student Achievements.
- Meeting Overview:
The North Brunswick School Board meeting on March 25, 2026, was filled with commendations and farewells, celebrating Parsons Elementary’s national photography award, recognizing student achievements, and acknowledging significant retirements.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement that Parsons Elementary School received a first-place award for elementary school photography in a national contest. The winning photograph, captured by retired preschool teacher Marilyn Loftess, depicted a child named Charlotte during a joyful bubble time at recess. Mrs. Guzio, the yearbook editor, was also acknowledged for her contributions. This achievement was celebrated with a plaque to be displayed outside the school’s technology lab.
The meeting also marked a momentous occasion as board members and attendees bid farewell to a retiring principal, who had dedicated 29 years to the district. The principal reflected on her career, emphasizing the importance of preparing staff to lead and thrive independently. Her departure was met with emotional tributes from board members who praised her leadership and her role in building a nurturing environment at Parsons. The principal expressed gratitude for the support she received and highlighted the collective efforts of staff, students, and families in the school’s success.
In addition to celebrating these achievements, the board recognized Parsons’ efforts to enhance community engagement and student learning experiences. A presentation detailed goal number four, which aimed to increase family involvement and attendance at school events. Communication tools like ParentSquare and ThrillShare were utilized to organize successful initiatives, such as a book swap at Parsons School, Walk to School Day, and a Martin Luther King night of service.
The meeting also highlighted the school’s innovative educational programs, including the SOAR gifted education program. Students from third and fourth grades, known as “triples,” shared their experiences, emphasizing the program’s focus on academic challenges and social-emotional growth. They detailed activities such as verbal reasoning games, stock market simulations, and the Happy Place Project, where they reflected on comforting spots within the school. The Parsons Pride program was also noted for its community service projects, such as making toys for dogs in shelters, which positively impacted both students and the broader community.
In a display of cultural diversity and artistic expression, Mrs. Rigby introduced a multicultural art project that encouraged students to explore their cultural backgrounds through art. The project aimed to foster understanding and empathy, culminating in a visual representation of the school’s diverse identities. Attendees were invited to view the art on display, highlighting the pride Parsons takes in such initiatives.
Another focus was the implementation of the Benchmark Advance literacy curriculum for grades K-4. The curriculum’s emphasis on engaging lessons and real-world connections was credited with increasing student enthusiasm and ownership of learning. Presenters highlighted the alignment of classroom instruction and ESL support as crucial for enhancing inclusive practices and recognizing language as an asset.
The board also celebrated the recognition of student Mia Montero, who received a $2,500 scholarship from the state principal supervisors association. Though unable to attend the scholarship luncheon due to her participation in the DECA National competition, Mia was praised as a “prototypical success story of North Brunswick.” The Model UN club was similarly lauded for hosting a large conference.
Routine business matters included updates from various committees. Mr. Wen reported on the success of the ESL program, with 72 students exiting the program that year. Discussions on personnel matters included the hiring of new staff and the search for a new principal at Parsons following the retirement announcement. Mrs. Tracy Quattraki was presented for board approval as the new principal, receiving applause from attendees.
As the meeting concluded, a video montage featuring the song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” highlighted the strong bond among students and the community spirit. The meeting ended with a motion to adjust the school calendar due to inclement weather and infrastructure issues, alongside approvals for renovation changes at Jud Elementary School.
