Stillwater School Board Faces Budget Challenges Amid Celebrations of Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Stillwater Area School Board meeting, discussions centered around the district’s budgetary challenges, the future of middle school athletics, and staffing reductions, while taking time to celebrate significant student achievements in academics, sports, and the arts.
The financial constraints facing the district were a primary focus of the meeting, with the superintendent addressing the audience about an impending $5 million budget reduction. This significant fiscal challenge has raised concerns among community members, particularly regarding the sustainability of middle school athletics. The superintendent sought to alleviate fears by clarifying that no middle school sports programs would be eliminated. Existing sports, including cross country, soccer, tennis, track, baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, volleyball, and wrestling, are set to continue. The primary change will be in the funding structure, which will shift from the general fund to community education, resulting in increased participation fees. This adjustment aims to preserve these programs amid the budget cuts. The transportation model for athletic events is currently under review, with options ranging from no service to full service being considered. The superintendent emphasized the priority of maintaining middle school athletics, despite the financial constraints.
In addition to the budgetary discussions, the board tackled resolutions regarding staffing. With the financial constraints in mind, a resolution was passed to release a number of probationary teachers for the 2026-2027 school year. This decision, though typical for this time of year, is further complicated by the heightened number of releases due to budget reductions. The superintendent noted the difficulty in bringing back more teachers this year, given the limited available positions. The board expressed understanding of the challenging nature of this decision, acknowledging the impact on the individuals and families affected. Additionally, a resolution concerning unrequested leave for ten teachers was approved. This process, driven by state statute and contractual obligations, ensures these teachers retain recall rights for five years.
Despite the budgetary discussions, the meeting also highlighted several student achievements. Among these was a recognition segment for the state champion Nordic skiing team. Coaches and players were invited to the front, with head coach Tory Craftson expressing immense pride in his team’s accomplishments. Craftson detailed the team’s journey to the state championship. The team’s academic achievements were also celebrated, with a gold award for their average GPA of 3.87. The team’s victory marked the first state title since 1996.
The meeting also recognized other notable student successes. Noah Nicholson, a pony wrestler, won a state championship, drawing enthusiastic responses from attendees. The band and orchestra also achieved superior ratings at a state competition, securing scores of 40 and 38, respectively.
The board addressed several policy discussions, including the approval of Policy 213 related to community finance. This policy saw strong representation from community members, including accountants and business owners, who contributed to the dialogue. Policy 423, addressing employee-student relationships, was also approved unanimously. This new policy, recommended by the Minnesota School Boards Association, replaces an outdated version from 1972 and outlines the reporting and investigation components relevant to these relationships.
Labor negotiations were another focal point, with the board entering a closed session to discuss the SCEA contract renewal. The approved contract includes a 2% salary increase for the first year, effective October 15, with step increases retroactive to July 1, 2025. Year two of the contract promises another 2% salary increase, effective July 1, 2026, alongside adjustments to benefits concerning medical insurance and long-term disability. They emphasized the need to address these realities openly and collaboratively, recognizing the value placed on education and teachers.
