Grand Marais Library Board Prioritizes Accessible Website and Community Engagement Amid Staffing Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
During the Grand Marais Library Board meeting on March 26th, attendees discussed topics, including plans to revamp the library’s website to enhance community engagement and address a critical staffing shortage. The Board also deliberated on how to better connect with the community, particularly with children and families, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and outreach.
A central topic was the library’s website, which the board agreed needed refreshing to improve functionality and accessibility. They reviewed proposals from three providers, ultimately favoring Sprout for its attractive design and economical, flexible service model that did not require a long-term contract. The board underscored the need for a website that is easy to update, stating, “We don’t need a fancy website with tons of pictures. This just has to do the job.” This sentiment highlighted the preference for practical over elaborate solutions, with a focus on ensuring the website could be a tool for effective communication and information dissemination.
Beyond the website, the Board’s discussion turned to community engagement strategies, particularly in light of current staffing challenges. The library is facing a significant staffing shortage, with approximately 62 hours per week unfilled due to the absence of a youth services librarian and a library clerk. Despite this, there was optimism, as interviews for the children’s librarian position were underway and another promising candidate had been identified.
Given the understaffing, the Board acknowledged that while community involvement is crucial, it should not come at the expense of overwhelming the current staff.
In exploring ways to engage the community, the board considered conducting surveys to gather feedback from both current and potential library users. They debated using digital platforms like SurveyMonkey versus traditional paper surveys to reach diverse audiences. The potential audience for the survey was also discussed, with a focus on starting with students and families in local schools to gather insights into how children and families access library resources.
The need for outreach was further emphasized through personal anecdotes shared during the meeting. One story involved a father who was surprised to learn that library cards were free, illustrating a gap in public awareness about library services. This spurred discussions on leveraging technology to enhance access, such as providing internet services or broadcasting library events to reach wider audiences.
Another point of discussion was the library’s meeting room, frequently used for virtual conferencing. The board considered potential upgrades to the space, acknowledging that such improvements could require significant investment. They stressed the importance of ensuring the room remains accessible to all patrons and serves multiple community needs, rather than becoming exclusive to certain activities.
As the meeting continued, the Board reviewed the Minnesota Public Library annual report. The financial aspects of library operations were also considered, particularly the movement of funds from the Northshore Federal Credit Union investment accounts to the 4M fund. This decision aimed to secure better interest rates and liquidity for the library’s financial resources.
