Allendale Borough Council Announces Shift to Online Legal Notices and New Dispatch Partnership
- Meeting Overview:
At the Allendale Borough Council meeting on March 12, 2026, updates were announced, including the transition of legal notices to the borough’s website to cut costs and the introduction of a shared service agreement with Ramsey for dispatch services, set to begin on March 16. The meeting covered various topics, emphasizing infrastructure improvements, community engagement initiatives, and financial planning.
The council revealed a shift in how legal notices will be published, moving from local newspapers to online postings on the borough’s website. This change, aimed at cost reduction, will streamline the process and make notices more accessible to residents. However, requirements under the Community Development Block Grant regulations mean some notices must still be advertised traditionally. The borough has also registered on the Secretary of State’s public notice page.
In another major development, the council discussed a long-awaited shared service agreement with Ramsey for dispatch services. This collaboration is the culmination of discussions dating back to August 2011, aimed at improving public safety communication. The new arrangement will utilize a contracted dispatch center as an extension of Allendale Police Headquarters. The transition promises improved coordination among police, fire, EMS, and public works. Existing employees will retain their positions in Ramsey, receive salary adjustments, and assume new supervisory roles. The move is part of a strategic plan to upgrade the dispatch room, whose renovations are estimated to cost between $500,000 and $700,000, and reduce the annual operational cost of approximately $350,000.
The meeting also highlighted ordinances introduced to address local governance and community needs. Ordinance 2608 proposes a new lobby attendant position at the police station to support the dispatch transition. Ordinance 2609 focuses on capital improvements, allocating $349,000 towards projects such as field enhancements, a records management system, and new police vehicles. Ordinance 2610 aims to amend property maintenance standards, emphasizing the upkeep of awnings and building conditions in the downtown area to maintain its aesthetic appeal.
Council discussions further addressed infrastructure concerns, particularly the sewer system’s inflow and infiltration issues. A resolution was passed to authorize flow assessment services, aiming to identify and address unauthorized connections, such as sump pumps, which contribute to increased costs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure the borough’s infrastructure is robust and sustainable.
Additionally, the meeting introduced Joanne Katapumo as the new land use administrator, succeeding the retiring Linda Garo. This transition reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to maintain effective administrative operations within the borough.
Community engagement was another focal point, with the introduction of the Community Financial Engagement Committee. This committee will involve residents in the budget process, gathering feedback and insights on financial matters to ensure transparency and inclusivity in fiscal planning. Plans for a shade tree grant were also discussed, with the goal of planting 250 trees over five years in celebration of the borough’s 250th anniversary.
The council president highlighted preparations for upcoming events, including a town hall meeting and a parade meeting, and noted the library’s budget increase due to rising assessments. Updates on shade tree ordinance adjustments and food waste initiatives by the Green Team were also shared.
Public comments during the meeting addressed concerns about road conditions following utility work, with residents calling for more effective repair solutions. The mayor acknowledged these concerns and assured that permanent repairs were planned as weather conditions improved.
