Lakeville Parks Commission Approves Student Bench Donation and Discusses Wage Increases
- Meeting Overview:
The March 26 meeting of the Lakeville Parks Commission was highlighted by a presentation from local high school students who donated log benches to enhance the community park, and a discussion on proposed wage increases for park staff to address competitive hiring challenges. Other topics included sports league applications, a proposal for an ice cream bus, and issues with job postings.
The meeting commenced with a notable presentation from high school students Mason Garcia, Connor Ellis, and Benjamin Dexterries, who proposed donating four log benches to the community park. Sourced from a sawmill in Berkeley, these benches are crafted from pine softwood trees. The students emphasized their commitment to quality. Mason Garcia, expressing a personal connection to the park, stated, “I always grew up at this park…the one thing I always noticed was the lack of seating in some spots.” The benches, measuring approximately six feet in length and one and a half to two feet in height, aim to provide more seating options for community members, including those needing breaks due to mobility issues. The commission responded positively, with one member noting, “I love the look of them. I think they’re great.” The commission unanimously approved the motion to accept the donation and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the students on bench placement.
The commission then turned its attention to the issue of staff wages, particularly for lifeguards and attendants. A proposal was discussed to increase the starting wage for lifeguards to $18 per hour, with those possessing more experience eligible for higher rates. A specific example cited was Ashlin, a lifeguard previously promoted to supervisor, who earned $19 per hour. Discussion highlighted that the current starting wage of $14 is inadequate given the crucial responsibilities of lifeguards. The proposed wage changes require approval from the select board before implementation. A motion to approve the wage proposal and forward it to the select board was passed unanimously.
The commission also addressed the lack of applications for the Clear Pond Park director position, despite interest in lifeguard and attendant roles. It was suggested that applications remain open to ensure adequate staffing levels. Challenges in timely job postings were acknowledged, with references to past delays in processing job descriptions.
Sports league applications were reviewed, with the Free Lake Youth Softball league’s application discussed. Concerns were raised about field conditions, with fields being described as “particularly soupy.” The league, scheduled from April to July, recently appointed Leah and Glenn as vice president and president, respectively. The commission approved the league’s application with conditions related to field conditions. Similarly, the Free Lake Soccer Club’s application was approved, pending separate registration for their travel team, Free Lake United.
The meeting also included discussions on the Lakeville Day event, notably disrupted by the misplacement of the organizer’s notebook containing four years of planning information. Members were called upon to assist in reconstructing the event details. Liaison updates were shared.
A proposal for an ice cream bus at the camp, presented by “Schools Out Ice Cream,” was another point of interest. The proposal involved a semi-permanent structure resembling a school bus, intended to serve ice cream from spring to fall starting in 2027. Considerations for logistical needs, such as water and electricity, were discussed, with suggestions for establishing a lease agreement to address these utilities.
Furthermore, the Lakeville Disc Golf Association, now a 501(c)(3) organization, was mentioned for its mission to improve Lakeville parks alongside disc golf activities. Clarifications were sought regarding the approval process for disc golf installations.
