Chatham Select Board Approves Weather Balloon Launch Project Amid Community Recognition Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Chatham Select Board meeting, attention was given to the approval of a weather balloon launch project at the local airport, alongside discussions on recognizing notable community members for their contributions. The board endorsed a land use license agreement with Urban Sky Incorporated, enabling the launch of weather balloons, while deliberations also highlighted the importance of honoring individuals who have made lasting impacts on the town.
Urban Sky Incorporated’s proposal to launch weather balloons from the airport was approved, promising enhanced weather data collection for the National Weather Service. The project’s significance was underscored by its strategic location on Cape Cod, a factor that Huntley Harrison, chair of the airport commission, highlighted as beneficial for regional weather forecasting. The agreement stipulates a monthly rental fee of $1,000 to the town, with no additional costs incurred, presenting a financially favorable arrangement for Chatham.
Board members raised minor concerns regarding documentation, such as renaming an exhibit to “Exhibit A” and defining “licensed purpose” more clearly. Despite these details, the board expressed enthusiasm for the return of a weather station, which had been absent since funding cuts halted previous efforts with NOAA. The reestablishment of this facility is expected to foster STEM-related activities within the community and provide three full-time employment opportunities, although the exact staffing remains uncertain.
The project’s approval was contingent on ensuring the airport commission’s satisfaction with operational details, including coordination around flight schedules. The weather station will launch two balloons daily, and a permanent notice to airmen will be issued to ensure pilot safety. Public access to the weather station was also discussed, with board members considering potential arrangements for community viewing of the balloon launches.
In addition to the weather balloon project, the meeting also focused on recognizing community members who have contributed to Chatham. Dr. Bob Duncanson’s name was prominently discussed, with board members considering ways to honor his work in water quality and at the wastewater treatment facility. The Historic Commission’s potential involvement in dedicating a permanent marker or other forms of recognition was suggested, highlighting Dr. Duncanson’s enduring impact on the town.
Alongside Dr. Duncanson, Cassie Abrew was mentioned as a candidate for recognition. As Chatham’s first woman shellfish constable, Abrew was credited with introducing the shellfish propagation program.
During the public comments portion of the meeting, attention turned to the restoration of the boathouse at Stage Harbor. Jared Fulture, a resident, offered his 1936 measured drawings for the project, which the board welcomed as valuable resources for addressing structural questions during the restoration.
In the agenda’s business section, the board granted a special one-day entertainment license for a concert by the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra, scheduled for July 13, 2026, at Cape Gold Park. Principal clarinetist and artistic director Timothy Peek outlined plans for a family-friendly, American-themed music event, which the board supported enthusiastically. The concert, free of charge, had already received approval from the park and recreation department, further indicating community engagement and cultural enrichment.
The meeting concluded with discussions on the nature of licensing agreements, emphasizing the need for clarity in the procurement process for municipal properties. The board’s unanimous support for the land use license agreement with Urban Sky Incorporated set a precedent for future considerations of similar arrangements.
