Cranbury Shade Tree Commission Plans Arbor Day Celebration Amidst Focus on Tree Inventory
- Meeting Overview:
The Cranbury Shade Tree Commission’s recent meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming Arbor Day celebration at Cranbury School and highlighted the ongoing challenges of managing the town’s tree inventory after recent severe weather events.
The Arbor Day celebration, scheduled for April 24th at 2:00 p.m., is set to be an event for the community. The commission discussed plans to retrieve a disease-resistant crab apple hybrid tree for the second graders at Cranbury School, with members volunteering to visit a nursery in Monroe Township for selection. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will handle the tree planting. Invitations will be sent to the mayor and the commission, as they will play a vital role in the event.
Tree maintenance and the need for a comprehensive tree inventory were also central to the meeting’s discussions. Members emphasized the importance of maintaining an updated tree inventory to effectively manage the health and status of trees in the community, especially in light of recent extreme weather, including tornadoes and high winds. These unusual weather patterns have underscored the need for proactive tree management to prevent potential hazards, such as those posed by unmaintained pine trees, which have caused issues due to their proximity to structures and falling branches during storms.
The commission has received five tree removal applications, prompting a review of the reasons for these removals. A member shared experiences of visiting sites where tree hazards were evident, such as pine trees near a shed. The need for an improved application process and follow-up on tree replanting was identified, particularly for trees deemed hazardous, which currently do not require replanting. The lack of guidelines for replanting after removals was highlighted as an area needing attention in the commission’s policies.
Concerns were raised regarding the tracking of trees that have fallen during recent storms. Members expressed uncertainty about whether fallen trees were part of the inventory and whether the commission had jurisdiction over certain roads like Cranberry Neck Road. These discussions pointed to the need for clearer guidelines and processes for managing trees on both public and private properties.
Community engagement initiatives were also discussed, with a focus on the Cranbury School’s plans for the 250th anniversary celebration. The school has raised funds to plant a tree for each grade level, with eighth graders responsible for selecting tree types. This initiative aims to foster environmental awareness among students, with commission members providing guidance.
The meeting concluded with action items, including confirming the Arbor Day event date and planning a work session on May 7th to address the tree inventory and application process. The commission is also considering coordinating the Helen Cody run with Cranberry Day activities, tentatively scheduled for September 12th.
