Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee Backs New Senior Center Amid Funding Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee expressed firm support for the construction of a new senior center, citing the benefits it would bring to the community’s older population. The proposed center, estimated to be 13,000 square feet and costing around $15.1 million, is set to replace the existing facility, which has been criticized for its inadequacies. The committee discussed sending a letter of support to the select board, finance committee, and capital planning committee, emphasizing the center’s necessity and the positive impact on the quality of services provided to seniors.
The project has been a part of the town’s master plan for some time, with the building committee proposing to utilize capital stabilization and UDA funds, alongside grants. A maximum of $10 million is expected to be bonded for the project, translating to an average annual cost of $143 per Ayer household over 25 years. Conditional approval from the select board to place the project on the fall town meeting warrant was received, pending successful discussions with the finance and capital planning committees.
Public outreach efforts are underway, including information sessions, a townwide mailing, and a dedicated website to inform residents about the project. The goal is to engage the community and gather input as part of the democratic process. A member underscored the importance of the public’s involvement, stating, “I truly believe in the democratic process,” encouraging residents to participate in discussions about the project.
Despite the overall support, there were concerns about the financial implications, especially considering other critical needs within the town. Some members questioned the necessity of the new center and its design, emphasizing that it should align with the expressed needs of the senior community. During the meeting, the committee highlighted the inadequacies of the current senior center, particularly the lack of privacy for health and financial consultations, which has affected the quality of life for seniors.
The committee’s decision to draft a unified letter of support was driven by the urgency of the situation, with decisions from the relevant committees expected soon. The letter aims to be concise, focusing on the necessity of a new senior center and its anticipated benefits. Additionally, it will highlight the importance of retaining qualified professionals at the center, linking it to the quality of services for seniors.
In other discussions, the committee addressed the ongoing challenges with transportation services for seniors. The need for a more accessible and reliable transportation system was emphasized, with a focus on the importance of linking other towns via a fixed bus route. There are funding issues and compliance with disability access regulations that complicate planning, but efforts are being made to enhance transportation options for individuals without access to personal vehicles.
The meeting also reviewed program attendance at the current senior center, revealing that 125 unduplicated individuals participated in various activities in August, resulting in a total of 723 attendance instances. Meals on Wheels and van services were highlighted.
