Ada City Council Approves Appointment of New Member Amid Facility Overhauls and Financial Resolutions
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Ada City Council meeting, a development was the appointment of a new council member following a vacancy. The council also addressed infrastructure issues, including locker room repairs and compliance updates at public facilities, alongside key financial resolutions and a new lease agreement.
The council tackled the pressing matter of filling a vacant council seat due to a member’s departure from the city limits. The Mayor sought nominations, and Scott moved to nominate Jeff Peacock, the only applicant, for the position. His nomination was seconded, and the council unanimously approved this appointment.
The meeting delved into infrastructure issues, particularly concerning the city’s locker room facilities. Following the installation of new stainless steel locker room doors, severe water damage was discovered in the men’s locker room, revealing cracked tiles that necessitated extensive repairs. The council was informed that a waterproofing system and retiling were required, while the women’s locker room needed even more comprehensive work, with all four walls in the shower area needing replacement. The repairs would involve removing existing tiles, applying waterproofing, and retiling, leading the council to approve up to $25,000 for these essential repairs.
Additionally, the council addressed safety compliance at the waiting pool, where modifications were needed to meet state anti-entrapment standards. The primary drain cover required replacement, and a vacuous pump shut-off was necessary to reopen the pool. Horizon Pools was engaged to undertake these modifications, though there was concern about potential delays due to state permit requirements.
Lighting issues also emerged as a focal point, particularly within the library. Thirty-six nonfunctional light bulbs prompted a discussion on upgrading to LED fixtures. A quote from Ada Electric proposed either reworking existing fixtures for $4,500 or replacing them entirely for $7,000. The council ultimately decided to replace the fixtures with newer LED styles, maintaining uniform lighting throughout the building.
In financial matters, the council considered Resolution 2026-0401, which related to the competitive negotiation for selling $1.8 million in general obligation capital improvement bonds. The resolution, which allows for bids to secure the lowest interest rates, passed without objection. The anticipated interest rate was around 3.1%, with plans to lock it in by May for funds to become available by the end of May or early June.
Further, the council deliberated on Resolution 2026-0402, concerning the establishment of two county state highways within the city. The county’s responsibility for costs and maintenance led to a motion to adopt the resolution, passing by roll call vote. Resolution 2026-0403, regarding an amendment to a lease mortgage with Benedictine, was tabled pending legal advice to understand its implications better.
The council also approved the Pine Prairie Drug and Violent Crime Task Force Agreement after confirming review by public safety. Additionally, a lease agreement with Arvic was discussed, where the lease rate was proposed to increase from $700 to $950 per month. The council sought clarification on termination clauses, ultimately agreeing to enter the new lease agreement at the increased rate.
Public Works updates included approval for a mower purchase under budget, with the council selecting a lower bid from RDO at $14,599. Plans for purchasing additional underground cable for ongoing projects were also approved. Discussions on public safety raised concerns about the need for new tasers and speed limit issues near the golf course, tasks that were delegated to the public safety personnel for follow-up.
