Pasco County Secures $3 Million Grant for Hurricane Recovery, Faces Housing and Development Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Pasco County Council meeting brought to light issues facing the community, particularly in the areas of disaster recovery, housing, and development planning. The Council was informed about a $3 million disaster recovery grant from the American Red Cross, intended to address ongoing hurricane damage. The grant aims to assist residents still grappling with the aftermath of hurricanes Milton and Helen. However, despite the availability of funds, there remains a notable lack of applicants from Pasco County, prompting a call for greater outreach and awareness efforts to ensure those in need can access the resources available to them.
Lance Lee, representing Rebuilding Together Greater Florida, emphasized the urgency of addressing the hurricane recovery needs, mentioning specific problems like roof damage and unsafe electrical conditions that continue to affect homeowners. Lee highlighted that the nonprofit organization is ready to use the grant for repairs at no cost to homeowners but stressed the need for increased applications from local residents. The Council was urged to help disseminate this information to maximize the aid provided by the grant.
While disaster recovery was a focal point, the meeting also addressed pressing housing and community development issues. The Council acknowledged the successful utilization of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds in acquiring and preserving affordable housing units. These funds have been instrumental in supporting low to moderate-income households, preserving 73 owner-occupied homes, and creating 40 new affordable housing units. The significance of these efforts was recognized with a resolution marking April 6th through 10th, 2026, as National Community Development Week in Pasco County.
Amid these achievements, the Council faced challenges related to housing developments, particularly concerning the proposed projects in flood-prone areas. The meeting broached the idea of buying out homes that frequently flood, as a long-term solution to mitigate future flooding risks. This discussion highlighted the complex balance between managing financial constraints and addressing community needs.
Concerns about multifamily housing development were also raised, particularly regarding the significant subsidies requested by developers. The Council deliberated on the implications of subsidizing apartment projects and the potential strain on local services such as fire and police departments.
In addition to housing and disaster recovery, the Council explored broader development and infrastructure projects. A significant portion of the meeting focused on proposed developments in central Pasco County, including the Kenton Road commercial project. This project entails the construction of non-residential spaces and a hotel, accompanied by necessary roadway improvements. Concerns were voiced about the impact on local traffic, with suggestions for widening roads and improving pedestrian pathways to accommodate the anticipated increase in vehicle flow.
The meeting also addressed community concerns about a proposed RV resort and hotel development. Residents expressed apprehension about the potential impact on their rural community, citing issues such as water consumption, traffic congestion, and noise pollution. The developers assured the Council that measures would be in place to mitigate these concerns, including compliance with noise ordinances and the provision of on-site storage for RVs.
