Whittier Regional Technical School Committee: Whittier Tech Student Advocates for Expanded Early College Program
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Whittier Regional Technical School Committee meeting, a student presentation on the benefits of the early college program headlined discussions. The committee also addressed community events, administrative updates, and future plans, including a focus on the school’s engagement with legislative bodies and upcoming initiatives.
The meeting’s highlight came during the public comment period when Aaron Baraby, a student from the Whittier Tech graduating class of 2025, advocated for increased investment in the school’s early college program. Baraby shared his personal success story, revealing how the program allowed him to earn college credits during high school, saving him $6,700 in tuition and nearly a semester of college time. He is currently pursuing industrial engineering with a minor in robotics and automation at the University of Massachusetts. Baraby’s testimony emphasized the program’s capacity to bridge the gap between vocational training and academic achievement, equipping students with the skills needed for post-secondary success.
Baraby proposed expanding the program to include pathways for early college language and math electives, noting the enhanced employability of bilingual candidates. He also suggested introducing an early college senior elective that aligns student coursework with career aspirations. His presentation resonated with committee members, one of whom acknowledged the importance of the early college initiatives and the challenges faced in governance.
The committee reviewed several community engagement activities, including a middle school event at the Naval Shipyard on March 21. The March 20 call with Senator Tar was another focal point, addressing ongoing matters with the regional agreement committee and school building project. This dialogue underscores the school’s effort to maintain transparency and collaboration with legislative bodies.
On the legislative front, members participated in the Day on the Hill event, where fiscal issues and legislative priorities were discussed with state leaders. The culinary students from vocational schools provided lunch, humorously noted by one member for requiring extensive sampling to ensure Whittier’s offerings matched their high standards.
The committee also engaged in a series of meetings aimed at refining governance and strategic planning. On April 1, members attended a regional agreement amendment committee meeting at Northern Essex, led by chair Angus Jennings. His methodical approach in reviewing agreements was noted, with another meeting scheduled for April 15. The online Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) meeting on April 4 provided updates on the feasibility study timeline, with the next meeting set for June 24 to seek further clarity.
Administrative updates included the introduction of a draft job description for a new administrative assistant to the superintendent’s office, part of the new budget. Despite questions regarding the necessity of the position, the proposal was approved without objections. Additionally, the committee approved an overnight field trip to the Skills USA state leadership conference, slated for April 30 to May 2, with the assurance that all necessary preparations were underway.
In matters of governance, the committee addressed the self-evaluation process, recognizing the challenge for new members to evaluate themselves effectively during their initial meetings. A suggestion to delay the discussion to the next meeting was made, encouraging members to complete their evaluations in the interim.
