Southwick Park and Recreation Commission Discusses LED Lighting and Pickleball Court Bids
- Meeting Overview:
The Southwick Park and Recreation Commission meeting on April 8th focused on several topics including the transition to LED lighting in park facilities and upcoming bids for pickleball court construction. Additionally, the meeting addressed personnel updates and discussed the future of community involvement in local projects.
The primary focus of the meeting was the transition to LED lighting systems at park facilities. The Commission has been in talks with Musco, a company known for its lighting solutions, to obtain a quote for the conversion to LEDs. However, the Commission is still awaiting a detailed quote and has yet to receive information on potential demand fees from Ever Source. This move towards LED lighting is part of an ongoing effort to improve energy efficiency within the parks.
The discussion also highlighted the upcoming pickleball court project, with bids scheduled to open on April 14th. The bid process has been postponed previously due to a high volume of questions, reflecting significant interest in the project. The Commission expressed anticipation for the bids to advance the development of new recreational facilities.
Another topic addressed was the staffing of park maintenance. Currently, one employee is managing the upkeep of the parks, with plans to hire a second employee by mid-April to assist with increased maintenance demands. The Commission is seeking candidates to fill this role before the busy summer season.
In addition, the meeting covered updates on the rail trail maintenance. A community member has been assisting with clean-up efforts, and the Commission plans to repair a section of fencing damaged by a fallen tree. The Friends group, historically involved in trail upkeep, is considering disbanding due to a lack of new members, which could impact future maintenance activities.
Lastly, the resignation of a board member was noted, prompting a call for nominations to fill the vacancy within 30 days. If no candidate is found, the selection process will involve the select board. The Commission also briefly discussed the annual park and recreation board elections, which appear to have limited candidates this year.
