Waldwick Council Discusses Park Improvements and Historic Preservation Funding
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Waldwick Borough Council meeting, discussions focused on the repurposing of a 2022 Open Space Trust Fund grant to improve accessibility and safety at Borough Park and the municipal pool, as well as the potential for a new grant application aimed at preserving the deteriorating Eerie Railroad Signal Tower. Members also addressed the ongoing efforts to secure funding for local concerts, safety improvements at Veterans Park, and the introduction of new fees for the use of recreational fields.
The council approved a resolution to alter the scope of a previously awarded $127,995 grant, initially intended for Brookview Park improvements, to instead fund resurfacing and ADA-related enhancements at Borough Park and the municipal pool. This change aims to deliver greater benefits to residents by resurfacing aging asphalt, improving safety, and enhancing user experience at these popular community locations. The council opened the floor to public comments on this topic, although no members of the public chose to speak.
In parallel, the council discussed a new grant application to the County Historic Preservation Trust Fund to address the deteriorating condition of the Eerie Railroad Signal Tower. With a project cost estimated at $100,000, the borough plans to match the funds if the grant is awarded. The preservation efforts would tackle issues such as peeling paint and broken components.
Additionally, the council considered a proposal for a new grant application to improve Veterans Park. The initiative would address safety concerns by resurfacing walking paths and courts to mitigate trip hazards and enhance ADA access.
The meeting also covered the potential introduction of a $20 fee for the use of recreational fields, although this is still under discussion. Furthermore, the council is waiting for responses from potential sponsors to fund concerts in Borough Park, which could enrich the community’s cultural offerings if successful.
