Blackstone-Millville School Committee Approves Geothermal System for New Building
- Meeting Overview:
In a move, the Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee voted to adopt a geothermal heating and cooling system for their new school building. This choice, favored for its energy efficiency and long-term cost savings, marked a step in the development of the 151,000-square-foot facility. The decision followed extensive discussion about the initial costs, potential savings, and environmental impacts associated with the geothermal system compared to the alternative air source heat pump system.
The geothermal system, with an estimated first cost of approximately $20.2 million, will cost the town around $8.5 million after reimbursements from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and savings from the Mass Save program. Despite being about $1.3 million more expensive upfront than the air source option, the system is expected to generate significant annual energy savings of $36,000.
The committee discussed the technical aspects of the geothermal system, which included plans for approximately 100 bore holes spaced 20 feet apart to accommodate the building’s energy needs. Committee members emphasized the need for test borings to ensure subsurface conditions were suitable for the project.
The conversation also touched on the potential for integrating solar-powered battery systems as an alternative or supplement to traditional electrical backups. However, the complexity and expense associated with implementing such systems for a building of this scale were highlighted, leading to a consensus that while solar solutions are plausible, they would add considerable upfront costs and require significant space for batteries. This topic raised concerns about the involvement of local fire authorities, particularly regarding the committee’s ability to manage battery fires.
This insight contributed to a robust dialogue about the feasibility and advantages of a closed-loop geothermal system, which was ultimately deemed the most economically viable and environmentally friendly option. The unanimous vote to proceed with this approach was seen as a strategic decision to streamline the design process and facilitate future discussions on specific project details.
Following the approval of the geothermal system, the committee opened the floor to public comments, though no remarks were recorded during this segment. The meeting concluded with discussions on upcoming sessions, where topics such as exterior material finalization and cost estimate reviews are scheduled to be addressed. The next meeting is tentatively set for May 13, with considerations for rescheduling due to member availability.
