Saddle Brook School Board Honors “Unsung Hero” and Discusses Neurodiversity Awareness
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Saddle Brook School Board meeting featured a recognition of Lorena Carmona Lopez as an “unsung hero” for her diverse contributions to the school environment, along with an impactful presentation on neurodiversity awareness spearheaded by a local speech pathologist. The meeting also addressed various updates on student achievements, educational policies, and facility improvements.
One item at the meeting was the board’s acknowledgment of Lorena Carmona Lopez, who was celebrated for her extensive involvement and positive influence within the school community. A resolution was presented to honor her role as a student ambassador, her leadership in the chess club, and her support for the custodial staff. Known as “the queen” of the chess club, Lorena also serves as a teacher intern in physics. Her recognition came as part of a broader initiative by the Bergen County School Boards Association to honor students who contribute yet often go unnoticed by traditional recognition programs.
Following this commendation, a presentation on neurodiversity awareness offered a deep dive into understanding various neurotypes beyond autism, emphasizing the inclusivity of all brain types, including neurotypical individuals. This initiative, led by a speech pathologist, has been developing over the past two years and aligns with Neurodiversity Acceptance Month. The presentation incorporated student insights, with one student addressing autism and the concept of masking, where individuals might conceal their traits to conform to societal norms. This was described as an exhausting effort to fit in.
Another student, Kaden Donahue, shared his newfound understanding of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as part of the neurodiversity landscape. He explained the causes and effects of TBI, providing a notable example of former NFL player Aaron Hernandez to illustrate the severe behavioral and cognitive impacts of such injuries. Kaden highlighted the emotional and physical challenges faced by individuals with TBI, advocating for the importance of establishing routines and seeking professional help to aid recovery.
The board meeting continued with updates from the business administration report, focusing on ongoing facility improvements within the district. These updates included the completion of installations at the middle and high schools, funded by a voter-approved referendum. The report also announced an upcoming public hearing for the finalized budget scheduled for early May, inviting community members to review and discuss the budget details before its adoption.
Student achievements and upcoming events were also noted, with a particular mention of a five-game winning streak by the girls’ lacrosse team, signaling their approach to a potential league championship. Additionally, the superintendent’s report introduced a new policy regarding the use of cell phones, smartwatches, and AirPods, which was implemented after the spring recess. Compliance with the new rules has been reportedly positive.
In the realm of curriculum and education, the meeting approved motions supporting DECA students attending national competitions, with well-wishes extended to them and their advisors. The discussion also touched on proposed tuition increases for preschool programs.
The meeting closed with committee reports, including updates from the Saddlebrook Educational Foundation about recent donations and contributions supporting school activities and improvements. Noteworthy among these was a donation from VFW Post 3484 funding a sixth-grade field trip and a furniture donation from the educational foundation itself.
