East Longmeadow Library Secures $400,000 Green Communities Grant for Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The East Longmeadow Library Board meeting on April 15, 2026, centered around developments including the award of a $400,000 Green Communities Grant, ADA improvements, and the launch of new programs across various departments.
The notable Green Communities Grant, amounting to over $400,000, was a major focus of the meeting. This funding comprises $250,000 from the grant itself, supplemented by more than $100,000 in utility rebates and incentives. The grant aims to weatherize the library’s infrastructure, focusing on improvements such as updating weather stripping on external doors and replacing six rooftop HVAC units. The project also includes implementing a new software system designed to monitor and control the HVAC. While specifics about the start date remain undetermined, a kickoff meeting with local officials has been conducted to map out the project’s trajectory. It was clarified during the meeting that the HVAC system would be energy-efficient but not include solar components.
In tandem with the Green Communities Grant, the board discussed several accessibility enhancements under the municipal ADA improvement grant. Modifications include the installation of a bump pad at the entrance, replacing certain concrete sections along the children’s department walkway, and constructing a new sidewalk from the emergency exit to the parking lot. The carpet and tile installation project, part of these improvements, has a vendor secured and is set to commence on May 4. This will involve replacing flooring in key areas of the library, necessitating the temporary relocation of furniture and shelving.
The meeting also addressed the Mass Broadband Institute (MBI) grant, which has enabled the library to acquire new technological resources. The grant facilitated the delivery of devices intended for educational purposes, telehealth, and remote work, including two smartboards, desktop workstations with webcams and microphones, and accessible keyboards. These are earmarked for installation in study rooms, enriching the library’s digital offerings. Furthermore, the board highlighted the progress of the MBI digital equity implementation funds, with digital skills sessions already underway. The “cyber seniors” initiative, involving digital navigators, has seen successful completion of several beginner module sessions, fostering digital literacy within the community.
The director’s report underscored the library’s vibrant programming across departments. In March, the children’s department hosted 31 programs with 697 attendees. The department is also preparing for its summer reading program, with the Beanstack platform launching on June 1 to facilitate reading activity tracking and raffle prize opportunities.
The teen department reported 12 programs and six passive activities, drawing a combined 412 participants. Noteworthy is the enthusiastic reception of the tech take-apart program, supported by donations from LCAT. The department expanded its “library of things” to include items like a TI 84 graphic calculator and a Nintendo Switch 2, appealing to teens’ interests.
Adult programming also saw robust participation, with 12 programs attracting 151 attendees and a successful seed library initiative, where all 50 kits were claimed within three days. Board game nights and proposed chair yoga sessions reflect the department’s adaptive programming in response to community interests.
Circulation and technical services noted a circulation increase to 14,630 items in March, alongside a door count of 9,769 visitors. New features, such as the “allow others to access my account” function, have been introduced to improve user experience.
