Margate City Council Faces Demands from Residents to Address Bar Noise Disruptions
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Margate City Council meeting, residents voiced concerns over noise disturbances stemming from a local bar, calling for immediate action from city officials. The meeting also covered discussions on labor agreements, ongoing city projects, and public safety updates.
One notable issue discussed was the noise emanating from Sunrise Tequila, a bar located in a commercial area adjacent to residences. Residents, including Jeff Hoffner and Janine Duro, expressed their frustrations over the noise levels, which they claimed were disrupting their quality of life. Hoffner articulated his discontent by stating, “I don’t want to hear my porch. I don’t want to hear my bedroom,” highlighting the ineffectiveness of soundproofing efforts. Duro questioned the enforcement of conditions set during the planning board’s approval process for the bar, seeking clarity on who was responsible for ensuring compliance with noise and operational hour stipulations.
The mayor acknowledged the challenges of enforcing certain conditions, particularly given the commercial zoning of the area. However, residents were not satisfied with this response and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement measures. Duro and other residents called for more accountability, criticizing the lack of action from city officials and the perceived rubber-stamping of the bar’s approval process.
The noise issue was part of a broader conversation about the responsibilities of city officials in managing the balance between commercial and residential community interests. Residents suggested implementing a curfew for the bar’s music, proposing it cease at 10 PM, as a potential solution to the ongoing disturbances. A participant argued, “The easy fix is to turn off the music at 10:00. You’re done,” reflecting the community’s growing impatience with the situation.
The meeting also addressed other topics, including ongoing labor agreement negotiations. Concerns were raised about salary increases in light of an 18% rise in insurance costs. A former city employee shared their apprehension based on past experiences where salary increases were withheld due to escalating medical costs. The representative clarified that while specific figures were not available, the overall budget impact had been estimated, and negotiations were ongoing.
In addition to these discussions, the council introduced ordinance number 05-2026, concerning a bond ordinance for the second phase of a lead water service lines replacement project, with a proposed appropriation of $2.5 million. The ordinance aims to address ongoing infrastructure issues, particularly the replacement of outdated lead service lines. Another financial measure, ordinance number 04-2026, was adopted to exceed municipal budget appropriation limits and establish a cap bank.
The engineering report highlighted several ongoing and upcoming projects, including the Ventner Avenue parking lot project, currently in negotiation stages, and the Bloom Pavilion deck renovation project, which is under review by the Atlantic County Improvement Authority. The lead service line replacement project is set to advertise for bids in anticipation of receiving a million dollars in grant funding. Additionally, the Lifeguard Headquarters expansion project is scheduled for a kickoff meeting, and the Winchester Avenue Road project is moving into the design phase.
Fire Chief Adams provided updates from the fire department, announcing the hiring of Aliana Melendez as a new firefighter, who will begin her training soon. The department is also preparing for the retirements of Kirk Battles and Debbie Bole, with Chief Adams noting their decades of service. Furthermore, the police department, led by Chief Henson, discussed the upcoming bike auction and emphasized the importance of vehicle and home security amid increased car burglaries.
Residents collectively sought assistance from the city in addressing these ongoing issues, expressing a strong desire for improved accountability and enforcement mechanisms to ensure the quality of life in their neighborhood.
