Westfield Council Advances Plans for Permanent Pedestrian Plaza on Quimby Street
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Westfield Town Council meeting, updates were provided on the transformation of Quimby Street into a permanent pedestrian plaza, alongside discussions on public safety measures, budget approvals, and community events. The council also recognized community services and addressed logistical changes due to local infrastructure repairs.
The council outlined the next steps in finalizing the street’s redesign, with plans to complete the project by summer 2027. After a public RFP and RFQ process, the town awarded a contract to Arterial for engineering and design plans. A steering committee, including council members and local leaders, is guiding the development of the final concept. The goal is to go to bid for construction by the end of the year. This transformation aims to enhance the downtown area with expanded outdoor spaces for dining, retail, and entertainment, fostering a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
In public safety matters, a resolution was approved to purchase personal protective equipment and a thermal imaging camera for the fire department, largely funded by grant money. Additionally, the council discussed ordinances to improve street safety, including adding handicapped parking spaces and adjusting parking regulations to enhance visibility at intersections.
The council adopted the 2026 municipal and Special Improvement District (SID) budgets, highlighting the town’s strong fiscal health. The budgets aim to balance increased costs while maintaining high service levels and continuing infrastructure investments. Council members expressed gratitude to the finance committee and municipal staff for their diligent budget preparations.
Community engagement was another focus, with updates on events like the upcoming Memorial Day parade, National Library Workers Day, and Arbor Day celebrations. An Earth Day free market and park cleanups were also announced.
The meeting also addressed logistical changes due to ongoing repairs at the Raritan Avenue Railroad crossing, urging residents to allow extra travel time. Additionally, a representative from the National Association of Letter Carriers informed the council about the upcoming Stamp Out Hunger food drive, emphasizing community involvement in addressing food insecurity.
