Lake Como Council Approves Porchfest and Police Week Support, Addresses Road Excavation Standards
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Lake Como Borough Council advanced several initiatives, including unanimously passing a special events application for Porchfest, endorsing National Police Week, and amending road excavation standards to enhance street maintenance practices.
The council’s approval of Porchfest, an annual event featuring performances by local bands on residential porches, marked an important commitment to community engagement and cultural activities. A resident, Mrs. Skull, facilitated this year’s event for the third consecutive time, requesting the presence of the Eber Bandits, a band that includes a member of the tourism commission. The council discussed the logistics of street closures required for the event, ultimately granting permission for road closures for a brief three-hour period. The council recommended that Mrs. Skull confirm her homeowner’s insurance coverage, even though the town does not mandate insurance for Porchfest.
In alignment with community welfare, the council backed Resolution 2026-66, supporting National Police Week and the Police Unity Tour. This resolution honors police officers who have died in the line of duty and supports the Police Unity Tour’s mission to raise awareness and funds for the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. The tour’s route, starting from Jackson, New Jersey, and culminating in Washington, D.C., was outlined at the meeting. Council members expressed pride in their local law enforcement, particularly recognizing Chief Tina Scott and officers from Belmar for their service. A light-hearted moment arose when a participant mentioned an individual named Drew’s interest in joining the ride, though he was unable to do so this year.
The council also addressed infrastructure through the introduction of ordinance 2026-3, which revises street excavation regulations. The ordinance mandates that any road excavation by homeowners or contractors must result in paving the street’s entire width. This change aims to prevent patchwork repairs. The ordinance specifies paving six feet in each direction across the street, a point that required clarification during discussions. With no public objections, the ordinance was approved.
Following the street excavation ordinance, the council introduced ordinance 2026-4, seeking to formally establish the role of a zoning officer within the borough. This position had been informally recognized since 1979, and the ordinance aims to codify it in local law, thereby streamlining zoning decisions and clarifying administrative roles. This ordinance’s first reading received unanimous approval.
In other matters, the council addressed road maintenance updates, specifically milling and paving scheduled for Fernwood Road, Brierwood Terrace, and Pine Terrace. Notifications had been distributed to residents, with work commencing the day after the meeting. Discussion also touched upon grants received for work on the borough’s west side, though specifics were still in development.
