Franklin Human Relations Commission Unveils Community Outreach Plans and Flag-Raising Project
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Franklin Human Relations Commission meeting, community outreach initiatives and a proposed flag-raising project emerged as key areas of discussion. The meeting revealed plans to engage with the community through various events and educational programs, while also highlighting the need for council approval for the flag-raising initiative aimed at honoring military members.
The meeting began with the introduction of Sai Jaz, a new commissioner who shared her life experiences as an immigrant, single mother, and cancer survivor.
Detective Brown from the Community Relations Bureau provided updates on upcoming community events. Among the notable initiatives is a fraud forum hosted by Assemblyman Danielson, targeting scams that disproportionately affect seniors. Detective Brown emphasized the importance of educating the community on these issues. Additionally, he discussed a DEA prescription drug take-back event to prevent accidental overdoses and a food giveaway organized by the Ultimate Charismatic Center.
A significant highlight was the discussion surrounding the “Franklin to Food Bank” annual fundraiser, which aims to strengthen community-police relations. Detective Brown underscored the importance of these interactions, especially in easing apprehension among teenagers during police encounters. The discussion further explored popular programs such as the “Franklin Fit” gym program, a basketball initiative, and a chess program, all designed to engage youth in productive activities.
Attention then turned to the commission’s efforts to revitalize its outreach materials, specifically updating its brochure to include essential information such as meeting dates and mission statements. The commission aims to distribute these brochures widely across local establishments and the school district, which might assist with production.
The flag-raising project proposal was another focal point, intended to honor living and deceased military members connected to Franklin. The commission has prepared a PowerPoint presentation for the council’s review, recognizing the necessity of council approval before proceeding. The proposed timeline hopes to launch the project in September, coinciding with the township’s 250th anniversary. However, the commission acknowledged potential delays, stressing the need for timely council approval and effective public outreach via social media and other platforms.
In addition to these plans, the commission discussed participating in a school district diversity program scheduled for May. The commission also considered recognizing meeting speakers with certificates or thank-you cards, exploring online templates to facilitate this gesture.
The meeting concluded with a decision to skip the May meeting due to scheduling conflicts, allowing members to focus on other commitments.
