Acushnet Library Faces Need for New Technology Due to Aging Computers
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Acushnet Golf Committee meeting, attention was given to the need to replace outdated public computers in the library, alongside discussions on budget management, children’s programming, and a staffing update for the children’s room assistant position. The committee also touched on an unexpected issue with the library’s air conditioning that had previously caused a leak.
The most issue discussed was the library’s plan to purchase new computers, totaling $5,123.36, including monitors and installation costs. The urgency of this purchase was underscored by the existing computers’ poor performance, as they frequently froze and failed to respond due to their age. These devices had been sitting unused for about a year because of the pandemic, further deteriorating their condition. The library plans to fund this purchase using the library gift fund rather than the stock gift fund, typically reserved for building-related expenses.
The meeting addressed the challenges surrounding the computer acquisition, such as an uncertain delivery timeline from Dell, with estimates ranging from three to four weeks. Concerns were also raised about labor costs not being included in a second quote and the condition of the monitors. Although there was an option to save $363 by keeping the existing monitors, the consensus favored investing in new ones for better resolution. The motion to accept the sales representative’s proposal, which included all costs, passed with unanimous agreement.
In addition to technology concerns, the meeting covered the library’s budget status. The library director reported that the salary line was at 69.44%, lower than the ideal 76.6%, providing some leeway for covering shifts due to vacations and personal days. The children’s room assistant position remained unfilled, with its budget line static at 73.1%. Energy line expenses were at 50% by January, raising concerns given the fiscal year’s timeline, though expectations were that costs would drop during warmer months.
Children’s programming was another focal point of the meeting. The director shared positive news about recent events, such as a craft program on March 28th, which attracted 32 attendees. Participants created bird feeders using pine cones and seed bombs, with alternatives provided for those with peanut allergies. Due to its success, plans were made to repeat the activity in late April. Another craft, the “grass head,” also saw a good turnout, with 21 participants creating versions of the Chia Pet-like project. Storytime sessions focusing on the alphabet showed increased attendance, from 26 to 30 in the second week.
Despite the absence of a children’s room assistant, the director expressed confidence in maintaining the programs effectively. More than 22 applications for the position had been received, an improvement over past hiring efforts, and first and second-round interviews were underway with promising candidates.
The director’s report also highlighted recent interactions with the new town administrator, Tom, and the importance of fostering communication between the library and town hall. The director attended a mandatory department head meeting and planned a one-on-one discussion with Tom to enhance operational cooperation.
Unexpectedly, an issue with the library’s air conditioning system was raised. Previously, a leak had prompted a service call to Air Masters, although the director was unaware of the timing of their arrival. Better scheduling and communication were deemed necessary to ensure service visits coincided with the director’s availability. Additionally, there were concerns about the library’s heating system, as the director noted feeling cold despite adjusting the heat settings.
