Trenton School Board Faces Community Concerns Over Proposed Cell Tower Near School
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Trenton School Board tackled issues, notably the community’s concerns about a proposed 150-foot cell tower near Trenton Central High School. Other topics included the district’s budget for the 2026-2027 school year and the challenges surrounding student graduation rates. The board also addressed strategic planning and community engagement efforts.
The primary focus of the meeting was the proposed cell tower, which has stirred concern among community members, staff, and students at Trenton Central High School. The tower’s placement, reportedly less than 80 feet from the school entrance, contradicts health guidelines suggesting a minimum distance of 500 meters. Monifeh Harrison, identified as a leadership team member, voiced her apprehension about the project’s rapid progression and the insufficient input from local residents and school staff. She highlighted that the city zoning code mandates a 150-foot distance from such structures, questioning the necessity of the tower’s location on school property.
Harrison referenced her past role as director of housing inspections, emphasizing the need for thorough health risk assessments. John Forte, another leadership team member, echoed these concerns, questioning the urgency of the project and advocating for more community involvement.
The cell tower’s necessity was reportedly justified by the zoning board as a means to maintain cell service for emergency calls, following the relocation from the soon-to-be-demolished St. Francis Hospital. However, skepticism remains, with Harrison and Forte citing the lack of comprehensive environmental and health reports. They pointed out that countries like Italy and Greece restrict cell tower installation near schools due to health concerns, urging caution and accountability in decision-making.
Forte criticized the contractor’s representative, Mike Moy of RiseUp Towers, for dismissing the responsibility to provide detailed health and environmental information, which he deemed unacceptable. The board was urged to prioritize prudence over mere compliance with federal regulations, advocating for a safer distance from school facilities to minimize radiation exposure risks.
The financial aspects of the cell tower lease were also discussed, with a $40,000 annual payment earmarked for student activities. However, the board recognized its limited control over zoning decisions.
Beyond the cell tower issue, the board reviewed the district’s budget for the 2026-2027 school year. The budget totals $535 million, with state aid contributing a portion. The board addressed the challenges posed by a 31% increase in health benefits, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility and strategic financial planning. The budget aims to align with the district’s mission and strategic plan, focusing on student achievement, community partnerships, staff development, and infrastructure.
The meeting also spotlighted graduation rates and alternative pathways for students who struggle to meet standard requirements. The district reported that 881 students graduated, but a concerning number of students utilized portfolio processes instead of passing traditional assessments. The board acknowledged the need for improved communication and data management to track student transfers and support those at risk of not graduating.
Community engagement was a recurring theme, with the upcoming strategic planning meeting scheduled for May 19 at Trenton Central High School. The board encouraged members to bring additional attendees to boost participation.
In the realm of human resources, the board noted the retirement of a long-serving district member and discussed new hires. Policy updates included first readings on regulations concerning equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment.
