Islamorada Village Council Stalled by Baseball Field Agreement with School Board
- Meeting Overview:
The Islamorada Village Council meeting centered on the ongoing challenges of finalizing an agreement with the school board for a baseball field project, the need for additional lifeguards at the local pool, and a master plan for marina improvements. Tensions continue to mount over stalled negotiations with the school board regarding the baseball field project, with concerns about project oversight, funding, and responsibilities taking center stage.
The council’s primary focus was on the baseball field project, which remains in a state of limbo due to unresolved differences with the school board. Despite passing a baseball license agreement on January 8, the school board made substantial changes to the proposal, creating a stalemate in the process. The council and the school board must reach an identical agreement for progress to occur, as highlighted by one speaker who likened the situation to legislative processes, stating, “Just like in Congress, if you don’t have identical bills, nothing passes.”
Concerns were raised about the quality and maintenance of the field, with the council firm on their non-negotiable position regarding these aspects. The possibility of maintaining a grass field was discussed, with one participant emphasizing the challenges, “I don’t think it should stay grass because it’s you we have to keep watering it, we have to keep fertilizing it, keep using pesticides.” The financial implications of maintaining a grass field were also considered, with a strong preference expressed for installing artificial turf.
The conversation revealed frustrations over the school board’s lack of responsiveness, with one participant urging, “we keep pushing them said, ‘Why don’t you get our lawyers with your lawyers and work it out?’” The need for a baseball license and use agreement as part of the existing interlocal agreement from 2024 was underscored, further complicating the situation.
Amid these discussions, the council was updated on the pool project at Founders Park, which is on schedule for an end-of-May opening. However, staffing concerns loomed large, with a significant disparity in lifeguard numbers between local facilities and Jacobs. The council noted that the fee schedule adjustments could potentially address staffing shortages, stressing the urgency of hiring additional lifeguards to prevent burnout and ensure pool operations remain stable.
The successful implementation of new admission policies and fees was reported, contributing positively to the general fund. Yet, it was acknowledged that the parks cannot be fully self-sustaining, and strategic budget allocations might be necessary to support additional lifeguard positions.
Another topic was the master plan for the marina area, with improvements to the boat ramp, gas pumps, and parking identified as priorities. The vice mayor’s successful securing of $750,000 from the Tourist Development Council was a step forward, enabling further grant applications for marina cleanup efforts. Discussions also included upcoming capital projects, such as aquatic center improvements and plans for an ADA accessible playground.
