Highlands Honors Local Student for Navy Commissioning Coin Design
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Highlands Borough Council meeting, the most notable event was the proclamation celebrating Russell Kashmer, a junior at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology, for his winning design of the USS New Jersey SSN 796 commissioning coin. Kashmer’s design, which was chosen from over 300 submissions, features the view from Mount Mitchell Scenic Overlook and incorporates symbols significant to New Jersey. The Council extended their congratulations and recognized Kashmer’s achievement as an outstanding contribution to society.
Additionally, the Council passed ordinance 02401, amending the zoning and land use regulations related to flood damage prevention. This ordinance, which is part of the borough’s ongoing efforts to address environmental concerns, aims to enhance local land use policies in response to flood risks.
Also of interest was the agreement with Twin Lights Condominium Association, authorized by resolution R 24050, which facilitates the provision of municipal services to the association.
The Council discussed the Environmental Commission’s (EC) initiatives, including their work on steep slope ordinances to ensure compliance with existing regulations and their successful communication with the Gateway National Recreation Area to address lighting issues at Sandy Hook.
Concerns were raised by a public member regarding the preservation of trees and the qualifications of individuals making judgments on tree ordinances. The Council acknowledged the need for expert evaluation and mentioned the upcoming review of the tree ordinance to align with Department of Environmental Protection guidelines.
Lastly, updates on local educational institutions were shared, noting the formation of a transition board for the Henry Hudson Tri-District, the cooperation in sports programs with other school boards, and the success of the boys’ basketball team.
