Lunenburg Select Board Approves Student Art Show Pending Integration with Spring Fair
- Meeting Overview:
The Lunenburg Select Board held a meeting to discuss a variety of community-focused initiatives, with the highlight being the approval of a student-led community art show, contingent upon its integration with the upcoming Lunenburg Spring Fair. Other discussions included the lease of land at Lanny Orchards for commercial use, filling committee vacancies, and ongoing civic projects.
The meeting opened with a proposal from Jen Higgins and Angie Richards, students of a civic and community engagement class, seeking permission to host a community art show on May 30th. The board engaged in discussions about logistical challenges, including the availability of tables and the acoustic music setup. A scheduling conflict arose as the proposed date coincided with the already planned Lunenburg Spring Fair at the same location. The board expressed strong support for the students’ initiative and suggested integrating the art show with the Spring Fair to capitalize on the larger turnout. A backup date was recommended should integration prove unfeasible, but the students, acknowledging the challenges due to their upcoming graduation, agreed to explore alternative dates. The board unanimously approved the proposal, with the condition of successful integration with the Spring Fair.
In another piece of business, the board discussed the lease of a small piece of Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) land at Lanny Orchards on Route 13. Jerry, representing Lanny Orchards, detailed the proposal to lease this unused triangular land, previously for overflow parking, to a company from Lemonster for displaying sheds. Though concerns were raised about losing overflow parking, Jerry assured the board of alternative parking arrangements. The board found no objections to the proposal and unanimously approved the lease for the intended commercial use.
The board also appointed Laura Lizzik to the Lunenburg 300th Anniversary Committee. Lizzik, a lifelong resident, shared her commitment to contributing to the committee’s efforts. Her participation in prior meetings and valuable input was recognized by the board, leading to a unanimous decision to appoint her.
Further, the board ratified the town manager’s appointment of Jonathan Francis as the outreach coordinator. With an extensive background in social services, Francis was praised for his experience with diverse populations, including those with developmental delays and as a caseworker for SNAP benefits. Although the exact start date for Francis remained unspecified, the board ratified his appointment unanimously.
The meeting also covered ongoing recruitment efforts and committee vacancies. The town manager reported on a community forum gathering resident feedback on potential uses for the site on Mass, where a cafe was the most requested use. The town manager noted the importance of obtaining grants for remediation if the town retains ownership, as grants were more likely to be awarded to a public entity than a private developer. The board agreed on proceeding with a Request for Proposal (RFP) to assess market interest and evaluate options based on responses.
A property on Lemonster Road was discussed, with the board considering exercising the right of first refusal after its removal from Chapter 61. The board awaited recommendations from relevant committees, with a decision deadline in July. Members supported setting aside funds for acquiring similar properties in the future, as advised by the Agricultural Commission.
During a recap of the recent town meeting, it was reported that increased participation was noted compared to previous years, attributed to improved communication and educational efforts. The board discussed logistical audio issues during the meeting, proposing improvements for future sessions. Additionally, they addressed plans to support the food pantry through a rental agreement and potential fall article proposals.
