Delanco Town Council Approves 2026 Budget Amid Rising Costs and Infrastructure Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Delanco Town Council meeting, the committee unanimously approved the 2026 municipal budget despite facing significant challenges due to rising costs in trash collection and state health benefits. The meeting also addressed ongoing infrastructure projects, public safety concerns, and community events.
A focal point of the meeting was the adoption of the 2026 municipal budget. The committee members highlighted the rising expenses, particularly the costs of trash collection, which increased from $180,000 to $311,000, and state health benefits. The township administrator’s efforts in preparing the budget were acknowledged with appreciation for her handling of these financial pressures. The budget process included resolutions for local examination and reading by title only, both of which passed without opposition. Following the approval of these resolutions, a public hearing on the budget was opened, but no public comments were received, leading to the swift adoption of the budget.
Infrastructure and public safety were also topics. The council discussed several upcoming and ongoing projects, including the pre-construction meeting for Newton’s Landing Boulevard and the Centennial Park improvements. A Department of Transportation grant for the replacement of a storm pipe on Hickory was also in focus, with surveys already conducted and plans to go out for bid by summer or fall. The township’s roof, identified as urgently needing attention, is included in a bond ordinance, which will be prioritized once funding is available in about six weeks.
The meeting also featured a special presentation by the fire official on fireworks safety, emphasizing the need for a resolution to ensure safety measures are upheld. The fire official mentioned the approval of a designated area for the fireworks display, contingent on maintaining clear zones and adequate parking arrangements, with cooperation from the county park to extend hours for event parking.
Public Works reported on preparations for an upcoming yard sale, which included grass cutting and street cleaning, highlighting efforts to maintain the town’s appearance. The police department shared April’s activity, noting 14 cases, 35 summonses, and 197 motor vehicle stops, while also preparing for National Night Out with security plans underway.
Concerns about the condition of sidewalks and tree stumps were raised, with discussions around updating township codes to allow pavers as a repair method for sidewalks damaged by shade trees. The issue of accountability for sidewalk maintenance was debated, as the township owns the sidewalks but holds residents responsible for upkeep. The absence of inspections since 2017 was noted, sparking concerns about public safety and the need for proactive measures.
The council also discussed the township’s affordable housing consent order, which was recently filed and approved by the court, fulfilling the township’s obligations with no new units required. This outcome was seen as a result of effective prior planning efforts.
Additionally, the council addressed correspondence from the New Jersey Department of Transportation regarding the fiscal year 2027 state aid program, with a grant application deadline set for July 1. The bond ordinance introduced during the meeting authorized $660,855 for municipal improvements, including the urgent roof repairs.
Public comments included a resident’s concern about a storm drain safety hazard on Ships Way, urging immediate attention to prevent accidents. The council acknowledged the issue.
The meeting concluded with the consent agenda items, including resolutions affirming the township’s civil rights policy, appointing a fireworks company for the Centennial Show, and establishing a memorandum of understanding with the Board of Education for emergency sheltering locations. The payment of bills totaling $198,982.36 was also approved.
