Cedar Grove Robotics Team Ranks 12th Globally, Honored at School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Cedar Grove School Board meeting, the Cedar Grove robotics team received high praise for their outstanding performance on the international stage, ranking 12th globally in the VEX Robotics Competition. The meeting also celebrated various student achievements, discussed potential district-wide infrastructure changes, and recognized community contributions to educational programs.
The robotics team, featuring Raj Pugdall, John Mai, and Daryl Aquesta, was lauded for their impressive accomplishments. They excelled in the VEX Robotics Competition World Championship in St. Louis, competing against 849 teams from 46 countries. During the competition, they advanced to the quarterfinals and secured a first-place finish in robot skills. Their success was not limited to international accolades; they also earned innovate and inspire awards at the New Jersey state championship and became tournament champions at local events. Beyond competitions, the team contributed by mentoring younger teams and volunteering at various events. The board expressed gratitude for the team’s hard work and the guidance provided by their advisers.
Following the recognition of the robotics team, the board addressed notable community initiatives, including a scholarship fund originating from the Class of 1965. Representatives from the class spoke about the perpetual scholarship established in 1975 with leftover reunion funds. The scholarship, currently awarding $500 each to one male and one female student annually, is designed to support Cedar Grove students’ educational journeys. The representatives emphasized the importance of ensuring the scholarship’s continuity and expressed hope for its growth to increase the number of awards rather than just the monetary value. They encouraged community support through an upcoming dinner event. Board members commended the initiative’s inspiring legacy and expressed appreciation for the representatives’ dedication.
The meeting also featured reports from student representatives, who highlighted various school activities and achievements. Notably, a health and wellness day engaged students with interactive presentations on oral hygiene, teamwork, and emotional well-being, including a session with a therapy dog. The Cedar Grove Police Department participated in “bring your child to work day,” providing insights into police equipment and duties. Student achievements were further recognized, with Memorial Middle School students of the month being honored, including Sophia Mafetone, an eighth-grade singer who performed an original song.
The board also celebrated academic excellence, with Trish Patel named valedictorian of the class of 2026 with a GPA over 4.5. Highlighting her leadership in organizations like Helping Hands of India, Patel was recognized alongside salutatorian Sophia Babrowski for her academic and athletic achievements. Additionally, Nyla Medina and Natalie Vera were awarded the New Jersey state seal of biliteracy, confirming their proficiency in English and another language.
In the realm of extracurricular achievements, the DECA chapter’s successful competitive season was acknowledged, with members qualifying for state and national competitions. HOSA, a future health professionals’ organization, was also commended, with members excelling in their inaugural year.
The board turned its attention to infrastructure planning, with updates on the district’s referendum planning process. A community newsletter was recently distributed, and an additional board meeting was scheduled to adopt the referendum ballot. The ballot will include questions on infrastructure needs and the potential reopening of LRP as a school for grades 3-4-5. Future updates on financial impacts and project details are anticipated.
The meeting concluded with the approval of various business and administrative items, including donations supporting STEM programs and the acknowledgment of the perpetual scholarship fund. Discussions also covered job description adjustments in anticipation of potential changes from the referendum, specifically related to curriculum alignment across grade levels.
