The most notable moment of the evening was the celebration of the newly formed Unified Robotics Team, which was crowned state champions. The team, advised by Anjanna Ayer and Kathy Zavaki, received accolades for their impressive accomplishment. Certificates were presented to the team members by Mr. Marini, recognizing their hard work and dedication. Jay, the CEO of Team 75, expressed immense pride in the team’s success and emphasized the learning potential unified robotics provides for both neurodiverse and neurotypical students. He mentioned ongoing efforts to expand the program to other districts, highlighting its benefits.

In addition to the Unified Robotics Team, several staff members received recognition for their contributions. Beth Berliner was honored with the 202526 Teachers Who Make Magic Award, and Luis Duralamo received the Smart Mayor VFW National Citizenship Education Award. Duralamo shared his excitement about representing New Jersey and Hillsborough and discussed an upcoming fellowship opportunity in Washington, D.C. Cole Hobbs was also acknowledged with the MSTA Maitelland P. Simmons New Teacher Award.

Mary Beth Hughes from Auton Road Intermediate School was celebrated for receiving the New Jersey Department of Energy Exemplary Education Award. Principal Chris Carrie praised Hughes for her dedication to her students and active involvement in school committees and clubs, stressing her significant influence within the school community.

The meeting also featured a surprise acknowledgment for Dr. Carrie, who was celebrated as a newly published author.

Recognition extended to student teams excelling in STEM and academic competitions. The Science Olympiad team, led by advisor Nim Dang, was celebrated for their first-place regional finish and fourth-place state result. A member of the team expressed pride in their accomplishments and the dedication of team members throughout the season.

The robotics teams, Teams 75 and 428, were acknowledged for receiving a sustainability award and serving as Alliance captain at district events. Jay, representing the teams, highlighted their achievements and commitment to community service, stating that robotics is about building community as much as building robots.

The Hillsborough High School debate team, advised by Luis Geralamo, was recognized for their success at Model UN and Model Congress events, where they won multiple best delegation awards. Club president Aditi shared the memorable experience of competing internationally and credited their advisers for facilitating these opportunities.

Additionally, the Hillsborough Middle School Battle of the Books team, dubbed the Ring Wraiths, was commended for their first-place regional finish. The performing arts program also received accolades, with the Legacy Show Choir being named grand champions in their division and the Hillsborough High School Wind Ensemble securing a gold rating and high honors.

Individual student achievements were also celebrated. National Merit Scholarship finalists were announced, and nominees for the governor’s school were acknowledged. The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) national qualifiers were recognized, with Alia Lapour, an executive leader, expressing gratitude towards their advisors and emphasizing the collective effort of their club.

Mira Banji, a senior who achieved national semi-finalist status, expressed appreciation for the support she received from the Hillsborough School District throughout her educational journey. She announced her acceptance to the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, crediting the district for her readiness for future success.

The Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Awards were presented to Maki Treadwell and Daniel Francis, and Ana Verma received the first-place regional Brain Bee national qualifier award. A parent spoke in appreciation of the school’s recognition of her son Daniel’s academic achievements.

The meeting also addressed school finance, with a new segment introduced by the superintendent titled “School Finance Thoughts with Jerry Eckert.” This initiative aims to educate board members and the community on school finance intricacies. Eckert discussed the concept of “budgeted fund balance” and the district’s success in maintaining a $4.5 million balance to ensure financial stability.
